help with Lens choice please

Firstly I would like to say hello, I've been lurking on here for a while and only just got round to joining.

Next my question, I think I may benefit from a zoom lens. At present I mainly use a da 35mm, A 50mm, m 28mm and m135mm lens. I sometimes feel I need something a little longer but unfortunately budget is my issue at the moment (hence the Mf lenses)

My budget will allow me a new tamron 70-300mm or a second hand pentax 55-200mm, I just wondered which one you guys would go for?

Thank you

If you mean the 55-300 Pentax (and not the 50-200) it is a well regarded lens, but the Tamron is decent too, and it will come with a warranty. If you trust the seller then I'd go with the Pentax 55-300, if things are iffy then the Tamron would be the way to go.

The DA 55-300 and F (or Takumar) 70-210/4-5.6 are the better budget AF zooms. I slightly prefer the latter. Pentax and Vivitar have great, classic MF zooms as well.

You won't get as good a quality as your primes, however - particularly at over 135mm. Something like the K200/2.5 will give you excellent photos, but it costs maybe twice as much as the DA 55-300.

i think the DA50-200 is better than the F70-210. Smaller, lighter, modern coatings, WR option. Only thing F70-210 has is that you may get it for really cheap if you look for it / are lucky enough.

The DA55-300 is a bit larger and heavier and bigger than DA50-200. But it has more contrast wide open and is faster through the range.

The F70-210 is weak between about 180mm to 210mm. Most of these test shots were taken at 210mm, so this is not a good comparison. I'm surprised Dave did these tests at the long end - perhaps he hadn't noticed this characteristic of the lens.

I've never even owned the DA50-200, because the images I've seen from it are lackluster. With the F70-210 I get nice images, similar to those I've seen from others. But as with any lens, you must use it with settings where it performs well. And the F70-210 performs well throughout most of its zoom and aperture range.
