You won't be disappointed in the 31 and you got it for a good price. It is an exceptional lens and your 16-50 is going to get lonely sitting in the camera bag by itself. Primes forever.

Question is, should I now just sell the 16-50? I don't really shoot much wide angle stuff so whats the point? I am hoping for a Full Frame Body in the future anyway. What do yall think?

I always find it nicer to have more money in the bank than having stuff that I don't use

Sigma 30mm 1.4

I love my Sigma 30 mm f 1.4 lens for its low-light, no flash performance. I actually bought it as a sort of vaccination against buying the considerably more expensive Pentax 31 limited. I have not had a chance to try the 31, so cannot say how its performance compares to the Sigma. Forgetting such a comparison, however, the Sigma lens will not disappoint.

Another choice and my candidate for the sharpest Pentax lens is the Pentax 50mm f 2.8 macro. This is a seriously good lens, and I place it in the same category as my 43 and 77 limited, though maximum aperture is less and with accordingly lower low-light performance. Actually, I have just named my four favorite prime lens walk arounds, the Sigma 1.4, the Pentax 50 2.8 macro, and the 43 and 77 limited. None of these will disappoint, although I often find the 77 too long, especially for indoors use.

I think you have one heck of a setup right now. The 31mm and 77mm for outrageous quality shots, world class!!! and then the 16 to 50 for a weather resistant pro lens. If you truly don't shoot wide that often then sell the 16 to 50 and pick up a 50 to 135 or 60 to 250 for the weather resistant option and go forth and be equipped like a boss.

That would be an awesome set up. The 31,77 and DA*50-135. Equipped like a Boss! Personally mine will be the 31,43, and DA*50-135. I'm only missing the 31.

I used to have a 35mm DA LTD Macro. I used it as my walk around lens for a while, until i sold it to fund a zoom.
But it was very versatile. Sharp, was a true 1:1 macro, and a great all around focal length for people and landscapes.

Edit: I see this is an old thread. Still, my recommendation remains, lol.

The 31 is better then the 43!

Looking at it from a different perspective:

With the DA 40mm/f2.8 Ltd you can really walk faster because it is so ligthweight!

What do you mean by "walk around"? For me it is not a prime. There are many lenses (could be primes) with different focal lengths for a reason.

My preference is for 28mm for most 'all-purpose' shooting on APS-C (I can't justify the cost of the 31mm Ltd.), I've just acquired an FA28/2.8 to replace my M28/2.8. For times when I'd like a bit more speed I've also acquired an FA35/2 - given I shot 50mm on film for years, although I feel this is a little 'long', I'm used to it.

The 40 & 43 are too long on APS-C for me, but perfect on film, as I still have manual film bodies, I'd prefer an FA to DA for flexibility.

Fast, walk-around lens

I am totally in love with my DA 35mm F 2.4AL. Unbelievable indoors and outrageously great outdoors. Also, only $185.!!! It will probably live on my K30. Great for foliage shots. Now I'm just after a DA 55-300 (or Dal) which will fill my requirements for a zoom. So now I have a
nicely balanced 35mm, DA16-45, Plus the 55-300 coming soon. For special macro work I have my Sigma 50mm EX macro for really close up floral shots. Regards, Freddy

+1

I have gone through my work for the past twelve months in preparation for another photo book ...... IQ from combo 31mm plus 77mm in low light is superior to Sigma 17-50 zoom.... which by the way is a better zoom in IQ than my Pentax 16-50.

IMHO, if there is one lens i won't part with Pentax, it is the FA31.
