Er, probably the FA 100-300 F4.5-5.6 or 5.8

Could you find a used DAL 55-300 for that? Looks to me like you could get close -- their are used ones on Amazon for 180. Anyway, that would be my pick.

Yeah you should be able to get close to $150 - it would be worth the extra $20-50 over anything else in this price range by a long shot.

zoom or tele? if it's just a zoom you want, what about the kit-lens? that should be cheap.
i've been shopping for primes and a tele on ebay.de for the last three weeks. ideally my budget would be half yours. apparently that translates into either a tamron or a sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6.
i saw a FA 80-320mm f/4,5-5,6 go for~113usd. the two Pentax 55-300 i saw were considerably more expensive at ~195usd for the DA-L and ~280usd for the DA. im leaning towards the FA.

P.S.
when i first spotted the DA* 60-250, i even could afford it. finally went for ~990usd.

The FA 80-320 recently was won on German eBay for about EUR 100-120.

well, not this one. 113.09usd (+p&p) two days ago. the next one to go will be even cheaper *fingers crossed*.

about the "above 200mm" part, isn't that the weak spot of the affordable lenses?

Yep, what Rondec said. A new DAL 55-300 can be bought for as little as $185 so you should be able to find a used one less.

I guess 210mm does qualify as ">200mm"?

If so, the SMC-A 4.0/70-210 is sharp at F5.6 all over the range.

I got it this year from eBay in very good condition for Euro 35 plus shipping. But in this case I was really lucky, as I was looking for this lens since more than a year, and most times they went for more than twice the price I payed. But always for less than EUR 90.

But it is very big and heavy.

These fit the bill, and they're AF lenses:

They're the same lens, only with different coatings. The IQ is similar in most situations. The Takumar typically sells for less, making it an even better value.

A couple years back I grabbed a Warehouse copy for $150, but they sure don't last long below $200.

My best bargain tele is the Sigma 100-300mm f/4.5-6.7 - sure it's a slow lens above 250mm but in good light it does quite well. Lighter and faster to focus than the 55-300. My main issue is a general lower contrast, which implies softness but isn't. My current copy cost under $50 so even if it's not quite perfect the cost won't hurt much; more commonly it's around $60-70. The same lens can be found with the Quantaray label.

+1 for the A70-210/4.

I've got two copies of the FA100-300 f4.7-5.8 and recommend it.

I haven't got the 55-300, but these are the two lenses that pop up most when tele zooms are discussed.
