Backwards or Forwards?

Hi Randy,
Well, the answer to whether you'd be going backwards or not (trading the Sigma for a 300mm f/4.0) really depends on you. Your OP question asks what you might need more tele length for. If you're not sure you even need it, then the 300mm isn't fulfilling a burning need, ie. 'I went to a great airshow and all the in-flight photos are too small, everything was too far away'...etc. So, if you haven't run into that situation so far, do you forsee an event, trip or situation where you might? If 'yes', then go for more mm's.
If 'no' and you're rarely caught short (mm-wise), nope.
Either way, the 50mm more reach (200mm f/2.8 to 250mm f/4.0) won't solve anything. Especially at the cost of the upgrade.
However, all the potential photo ops presented by the previous posters might spark an interest for you. This is the part we can't answer, only you can.
Sorry to throw the ball back to you, but we can only suggest, not decide.
Good Luck either way!

Love my 60-250 when I'm traveling in the car. Lots of times a good shot (farm, old barn, whatever) is just too far away for anything short but you cannot just walk onto private property to get the shot.

Well believe it or not, in addition to many of the comments above, long teles can be used for landscape work. If you have to shoot a landscape from a place you can't get into, a tele can compensate for this lack of access.
Sometimes the restriction on where you can go is purely physical, and a narrow angle of view is simply the right choice for a landscape. Lacking a helicopter, the only way I could have got this shot is with a telephoto. As it happens, this was with the DA* 60-250. I decided not to keep the lens simply because I am not often enough in such situations, but I sold it with regret.

Landscape photography isn't only for wide angle lenses:

I think a 50mm f/0.95 would do the trick.
