Universal lens for a K100d

Hello,

My knowledge about Pentax cameras is pretty much non-existent as I'm a Canon person myselt (sorry, please don't kick me off the forum ) but I promised I would help my Grandfather find a good new lens for his camera. He has been using the kit 18-55 (which in my opinion is awfully loud - is that normal?) and is now looking to buy a telephoto, however, in my opinion a good universal lens would make more sense. He just shoots for his own enjoyment and although universal lenses have their drawbacks in terms of image quality compared to designated telephoto lenses, I still think that the convenience of not having to switch lenses outweighs the negatives.
I found the Sigma 18-250 has been recommended quite a lot and I even found one that almost matches our price range but further reading brought up the issue of AF. If I understand correctly the AF of the lens does not work with the K100d? If this is the case could you please recommend any other decent lenses with a wide angle between 18 and 25 and the longer end in the 200-300 range that would work with the K100d?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Lenses with a (noisy) screw drive will work with the K100D. However, Sigma's HSM or Pentax's SDM or other "silent" motor-focusing lenses will not AF.

The Tamron/Pentax 18-250 is considered a good superzoom, and uses regular screw-drive, so it will work with the K100D. The K100D Super *can* be used with SDM-type AF lenses.

I think there´s nothing wrong with the kit lens. I would buy him a used DA55-300. Great lens at a great price

Two Is Better Than One?

Hello Mica, Welcome to the Forum!
I'm in agreement with carriangas, the Pentax DA 55-300mm seems like a better fit, for a few reasons.
One, your Grandfather wants a tele, not a superzoom. He has a decent kit wide-to-normal. I understand your feelings on the matter, but changing between 2 lenses isn't that big of a deal, and there may be some pride involved on his part if you make a different decision.
Two, the Sigma 18-250mm is an f/3.5-6.3 and sells for about $500.
The Pentax 55-300mm is f/4.0-5.8 and sells for $350-400, so it's less expensive, 50mm longer and faster at the long end.
FWIW, the ratings here are virtually identical, the Sigma is 8.67 and the Pentax is 8.64.
Good luck either way!

The DA 55-300mm beats any superzoom for telephoto use.

+1
The Tamron 18-250mm/Pentax DA18-250mm is an excellent choice, a good all-arouns lens well regarded across all brands incl. Canikon. Like all all-around lenses, the DA18-250mm is a compromise and its IQ is not comparable to a good prime lens. But the DA18-250mm is a very decent lens, well-liked among Pentaxians. It can be strongly recommended.

The Tamron/Pentax 18-250 is no longer manufactured but it can be found regularly on the second-hand market: eg, PF marketplace, Adorama used, keh.com... The Tamron tends to be slightly cheaper and the IQ is basically identical to that of the DA18-250mm.

Hope that the comment may help.
