Sigma Zoom lens

I am planning to buy either "Sigma 75-200mm F3.8" Autofocus or "Sigma 75-200mm f/2.8-3.5 " for their compact size. These are old lenses, but I like their compact size.

Which one is the believed to be Zeiss design and which is considered to be better?

Like to have opinion from people who have used it. Also how do they stack up with current popular "Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD Macro"

It should be the 75-200 F3.8.

As far as image quality goes...
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/60758-sigma-75...yone-know.html

Right click and select Original for full size
Duck | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
200mm F4 on k-7 at ISO400 (very noisy, but seems sharp at 200mm F4)

Tulips | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
200mm F5.6 on k-7 at ISO200 (looks sharp)

Cottage | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
105mm F5.6 on k-7 at ISO200

I would say the image quality looks to be pretty good (harder to judge because it is on the k-7.. and the images are noisy ;x)

For comparison, my Tamron 70-200 images:

122.5mm, ISO100, F3.2, Pentax k-x

200mm, ISO400, F4, Pentax k-x

200mm, ISO100, F4, Pentax k-x

So if it's image quality, I would say the Tamron is better. But the Sigma 75-200 F3.8 is a very good lens from what I can see.
Also, have to consider, manual focus vs autofocus, push-pull zoom vs twist-zoom, small vs huge and heavy, old vs new, etc.

I have the 75-200 f3.8 Autofocus and have used it for several years. It is a great lens for the price. I use it to shoot in hockey arenas and am pleased with the results and I mostly shoot with primes. It is supposed to be Zeiss glass and results are good wide open. I primarily use the lens for indoor use( have the 55-300 and DA*200 as well) and I would not hesitate to use it outdoors provided you use a lens hood. It weighs about 660 grams and is solid. It has the push pull zoom which I happen to like. It was a bargain and the best $100 spent. Get one if you can find one. It will show as an F4 on the display.

What about the other lens ""Sigma 75-200mm f/2.8-3.5 " I mentioned. Is it also a zeiss design? Does it also perform as good as the F3.8 one?

I do not believe that the APO version is a Ziess design and have not heard the positives that the Autofocus 3.8 has received. But I have never used the APO, so take it for what it is worth. The 3.8 produces good images, not as good as my DA*200, but I have not found a zoom lens that measures up to a prime at any cost. The 3.8 is a constant aperture lens which generally is found in better lenses.

I love pixel-peepers

The Sigma 75-200mm f3.8 Autofocus is not a bad lens, but it appears to be machined out of a 3" billet of aluminium alloy and feels just like that - solid and heavy. Optically it is not bad, but it shows its age - the coatings could be better. Nice bokeh. Autofocus has can be noisy but does work well. Zoom creep can be a problem. It is an East German Zeiss design, optically and mechanically, in those days Sigma weren't up to designing lenses.

Get it, if you can find one cheap (< £65). Whatever you do, avoid the Sigma 70-210 F4-5.6 UC II which is really bad.

The 75-200 2.8-3.5 is a lens of exquisite quality. I just picked up the Quantaray branded version for the second time after selling the first one a year ago.

Shot on a sony a6000 this afternoon to demonstrate it's quality of character and bokeh

some shown were shot on an A7 like the daffodils and the home steps with the flowers
