This one is very compact, only 5 pounds. Very practical.

Hello folks wouldn't be the k5 + 18-35 + 50 + 77 + 70-200 the ultimate combo ? Maybe with an extra 100 macro and 10-20 ?

It would be one very good combo yes. Ultimate? Depends on what you are looking for.

to me it sounds like it. I have the Sigma 75-200 and a Pentax F 50 f1.7. I'm awaitng the 18-35 to fill the range

Great post, Heie, thanks!

Looks like a cracker lens. I'm looking forward to the first Sigma 18-35/1.8 vs Pentax 31/1.8 comparisons.

Trouble is, I'll need the Pentax 31/1.8 anyhow. Nice work, Pentax, setting up a holy trinity that you must own in its entirety whether you need all the lenses or not.

I agree Sandy. I've been thinking that the following kit might be perfect for small to medium venues with my K30.

Sigma 18-35 f1.8
Pentax FA 43 ltd
Pentax DA*55
Pentax FA 77 ltd

Then if I need longer reach I can add the 50-150 and/or DA*200

A lot of people don't realize how large and heavy this lens is. While it may be good for convenience, I would never buy such a large and heavy lens for street shooting and just for walking around. This lens is almost same size and weight of my Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC!

No doubt this is a good lens optically.

Hmm. You're right, it is definitely a big and heavy beast of a lens. Might not balance that well with my K-x or K-01. Maybe I need to invest in a K-5 plus battery grip before I get this lens... at the same time, I was hoping to use this lens indoors rather than walking around. So, picking up and handling such a heavy lens for short durations while inside my house might be manageable,.

I think we realize the size of the lens. It's shorter than the 50-135 and weighs 100g more and yet people seem to be very comfortable carrying it about on photo outings. Its smaller and lighter than my 70-200 and I use it for hours at a time during sports outings.
Dimensions (DxL) 3.07 x 4.76" (78 x 121mm) Weight 1.79 lb (810g)
As comparisons -
The Tamron 10-24
Dimensions (DxL) Approx. 3.1 x 3.9" (7.87 x 9.91 cm) Weight 14.32 oz (406 g)
The Tamron 70-200/2.8 (old model)
Dimensions (DxL) Approx. 3.5 x 7.6" (8.89 x 19.30 cm) Weight 2.53 lb (1150 g)
Pentax 16-50
Dimensions (DxL) Approx. 3.3 x 3.9" (8.38 x 9.91 cm) Weight 1.24 lb (565 g)
Pentax 50-135
Dimensions (DxL) Approx. 3.0 x 5.4" (7.62 x 13.72 cm) Weight 1.51 lb (686 g)

and it's not that much bigger than my Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC HSM:

27.2 oz (780 grams)
3.0" x 5.3" (76 x 135mm)
67mm filter

Yep, +1 for that combo as well.

My main concern with this lens for concert work will be how it handles flare. From the reports it's tack sharp but the Lenstip review said the flare resistence was poor. That's not good for a concert shooter. I will have to wait for more reviews.... and for it to be available for Pentax in the first place of course.
