Enable aperture ring in the menu (usually the very last choice). i suggest you try the lens and do test shots before you go out, so that if you bump into any problems, you can search the forum for advice.
In forests, I enjoy using the M 50mm f1.7 for some "closeup" type photos of plants (moss, bark, individual blossoms), but to get a good feel of the whole forest, you will want to use the widest lens you have. So 18-135mm at 18mm. Tripod and 2 sec timer (with ISO 100) will also noticeably improve photo sharpness. If you have the time to set this up.
I have never been in a Redwood forest (there are none where I live), but its a great location for photos. Good luck!
