SMC Pentax-A 1:2 50mm - I don`t get it

Hello dear Pentax users.
For some time I am a K-X user - and that`s fine (use it in auto mode). I know how to operate SMC Pentax-A lenses in Av mode ( I don`t have any Ms). But my knowledge is poor when it comes to manual settings.
A week ago I decided to buy Pentax Me Super - just to get to know how to take good pics and simply learn.
I`ve read forums and I read that my ME Super should work Pentax-A lens.
But when I mount pentax A lens on Me Super (no battery yet in the body/no film) and try to scroll the apperture ring nothing changes. I mean the petals in the lens don`t move - but they do move when I dismount it and simply look in the lens.
I know that there`s somewhere a trick. Or maybe I need batteries cause the body will adjust the F value itself. The camera also has to buttons (manual shutter) maybe it`s this.
I know that the body is automatic when it comes to the time of shutter.
Can I operate F value form the body then?

Please forgive my newbe photo language it`s hard but I`m learning
thanks
Kellya

when you aim, the lens is always wide open. It close when you shoot.

You need batteries, then load them, use the 1 or 2 or 4 sec as shutter speed, to see the lens closing a bit the iris according to the chopsen aperture.

The aperture blades will not move when the lens is mounted until the shutter is tripped. All metering is done wide open, the lens can communicate the aperture that is set to the camera by ,eans of the aperture linkage. The ME Super is limited to Av, the Siper Program has Tv mode and the camera can set the aperture when the lens is set to 'A'.

As others have said, the lens only stops down (closes up) to take the actual picture, panic ye not all is well.

No, you can't set the aperture from the body. You push the small button near the "A" on the aperture ring to unlock it and use the ring to set the f-number. The camera will set the shutter speed for you. The manual is available for free* from the the Butkus site:

Pentax ME Super instruction manual, user manual, PDF manual, free manuals

*Donations appreciated
