DA*300 with Pentax 1.7 AF Adapter

I would appreciate any tips on using the Pentax 1.7 AF Adapter with the DA*300 lens.
I am guessing that I should set the lens to manual focus
Can I use both AFC and AFS?
I saw one person who suggested using catch in focus for this configuration. How would that work - it seems this would just bypass the auto focus in the 1.7 Adapter?
Thanks.

Hello Bob.

I thought of jumping in on this thread and offer a few hints, in the form of some links (below):

jpzk's Album: DA*300/4 and Pentax 1.7x AF-adapter photos - PentaxForums.com
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/91900-pentax-f...ength-not.html
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/lens-sample-photo-archive/154265-pentax-f...er-lens-3.html
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/162929-pentax-...ervations.html

and I am sure there are more.
I don't remember if I have pics taken with the configuration which you are mentioning, but I am more than willing to give it a go tomorrow.
(forecasts call for decent sunny weather - and dry --- best scenario to test that)

This thread here: SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter Reviews - Pentax K-mount Teleconverters and Adapters - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database is very informative as it is from actual users of the TC in question and from those who reviewed it also used the DA*300/4.
NOTE: some reviewers mention that this is useable only for non-AF lenses ... well, it is useable with the DA*300/4 alright "as we all know".

My method is usually: DA*300/4 in manual mode; Pentax K5 on AF-S. I make an approximate focus to the target and then just let the TC do its "AF" job: works great.
If I recall correctly, those pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rdlphotos/sets/72157633265058138/ were taken with CIF for the Redpolls in flight at the feeder.

So, I will return here with some more "hints" and if someone else does jump in before I do, I'll just take the back seat.
In the meantime....

Cheers!

JP

You don't need to use catch in focus or put the DA 300 in manual mode, it works great with the DA and will act as a focus limiter to keep the lens from doing that slow search it likes to do when it looses focus. I thought it worked better and faster with the afa then without when I had the combo.

Da*300 + af1.7

Hi have both and they work pretty good together, use whatever mode you like,AF on you must get close to focus then the AF works..for BIF alot of practice, some sharpness is lost on long shots--close to infinity..but could be weather/sun disturbance as well
recommend a tripod..also works on the Q..definitely need a tripod!!
