I really don't agree with either of these points. The 35-70 is visibly sharper at f/5.6 or f/8, I currently own both and have shot them side by side. The DA-L is not "bad" at all. It's got a plastic mount and no quick shift but optically is the same as the II and WR versions. It doesn't come with a hood but you can get a replica of the proper Pentax hood for a few dollars.
If you go check the optical elements in DAL and DA II/DA WR you will find they are different.
I agree with you about the 35-70 is sharper part.

Everything I've ever read says the opposite.

I checked the database and it seems that I'm wrong.
The only difference seems to be that instead of the ED glass the DAL uses a regular glass.
Thank you for pointing out it.

Rest assured, none of them have ED!

agreed with this, I couldn't find any indication that the version II or WR has ED glass, although this lens reviewer below did say ED glass in the description of the lens, but I bet that's an error.
Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm II f/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) Interchangeable Lens Review

other than that website, no other places refer to the lens as having ED glass.

The DA-L 50-200 does have ED glass though.

I have the F35-70 and the DA18-55 WR and I like them both. 35mm is not very wide so think of the F as being std to portrait. It will be useful if FF ever materialises.
