You won't believe what I "Bought"

I just bought one of these from eBay, and have a few hours of playing around with it .
I took a few shots of a Sharp-Shinned Hawk in my backyard this morning, I can definately see the PF, but the subject is sharp, and a macro shot of a Pacific Chorus Frog this afternoon.
I'll try to get the photo's themselves posted in a bit.

300mm, 1/250 @ f/5.6

180mm macro mode, 1/200 @ f/5.6

I've not adjusted anything on these two shots, just wanted to get them posted.

It's a decent lens for the price, and even does sports well in bright enough conditions...

Looking forward to see what comes out of your camera

Also be careful about the Tamron rear lens cap "feature". Line up the dot when you put it on. There's a way to get the rear cap on where it'll get stuck. Had to send mine in for warranty work so they could take it off :-P
And it does PF in high contrast situations, so if your subjects have bright backgrounds, you might not be happy w/ crops...

First thing I did was toss the rear caps from the Sigmas and Tamrons I own back in the box. Stupid designs, just trying to reinvent the wheel. You can get the right rear caps (Pentax knock off versions) on Fleabay that have the flange to protect the electrical contacts for about $2.00 each. I always have 4-5 extras in the spares box.
Last thing you want to be doing is fooling around with the rear cap in the dark or poor weather.

Certainly was Ben.

iso 800; 200mm; f4.5; 1/250.....and the humble 'ol *ist DS.
You can see just a touch of the purple fringing under the bottom jaw, but for the price and a light walk around lens with a bit of reach its hard to beat.

I sold mine to get the Tamron 18-250 last x-mas, but I wish the wife would have let me keep the 70-300 di tooo...

To be honest, for guys like you, what lens to use isn't a big deal. I'm sure you can take excellent photos w/ pretty much any lens

Through a window, at 300mm and f/5.6. Probably the least optimal I could set up.

It isn't a bad lens. I do call it my purple monster though. Not sure if I have a bad copy or not. It does a great job at macro work for large insects however, so I haven't exactly tossed it away yet. I did shot a whole series of ducks washing themselves in water, and was forced to de-fringe the whole lot. Because of this, I can’t say I like it overly much either.

Here is an example of the purple fringing I get in high contrast areas.

I f you shot in RAW you could have removed the artifacts quite easily.

I have the older version of that lens (without the digital coating) and for the money I payed ($90 US used from KEH) you really can't beat it. AF is a little slower then more $$ lenses but like others have said it can produce some nice results and a professional like yourself I bet will be able to produce stunning results (with any lens).

I don't use it much anymore since I have better lenses that cover the same focal ranges but since I still don't have a dedicated macro lens I still use it for that.

Anyway it is a great excuse to post some photos
