Takumar 135 f2.5 M42 - first vs second version

How different are Takumar 135 f2.5 M42 - first vs second versions? I visited a local shop and first version is for sale is around $90 and hence wondering if it's worth buying

I have a Takumar 135 2.5 kmount, and the photos are OK, but the CA is really bad if the lighting is not just right. I think I paid $75 for it on ebay.
I just picked up an A135 2.8 that is one of the 2 sharpest lenses I own and it was about $160 (the other is my M100 2.8)

The optical formula is different, 5 elements vs. 6. The later version, part number 43812, has 8 aperture blades. I know the Super-Takumar 135/2.5 has 6 blades, part number 43801. I'm not sure how many blades are on the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 135/2.5 part number 43802. There are differences in weight and markings on the distance scales.

I had 43801 and 43812 briefly and didn't see a lot of difference in a handful of test shots on 6Mp. Others have been more discerning. The 43812 is going to have a higher value, be easier to sell, and has a better reputation. That $90* is probably high for a 43801, about right for 43802 and low for 43812.

These lenses all have a great feel and look cool on the camera.

*really wish the exchange rate would get back to normal soon

I am about to dazzle you with my vast knowledge of vintage lenses (helped by the fact that I have Gerjan van Oosten's excellent book).

There is no Takumar 135/2.5. The first Pentax 135/2.5 is a Super Takumar, of which there is only one version.

There are two versions of the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 135/2.5. The first SMC version had the same formulation as the Super Takumar but with SMC coating. The second version is reformulated with, according to van Oosten, enhanced sharpness and image contrast.

The K 135/2.5 is optically the same as the SMC Takumar.

The K-mount Takumar 135/2.5 is a cheap version without multicoating and with inferior internal anti-flare baffling.. I had one for a while- not awful, but not nearly as good as the multicoated SMC and K versions.

I have the SMC Takumar version 2 and the K 135/2.5. Nice lenses, but in my view not much different from a good modern zoom at mid apertures. Wide open- CA can be an issue. Got mine cheap, they're still great on my film cameras.

My guess is that for $90 a first version SMC Takumar will give you a fairly nice lens, interesting to play with as an example of vintage optics, but not one to make a mainstay of your system.

I have the 43802 (first version SMC Takumar) and find it to be a very nice optic. It is a bit underrated since the second version has slightly improved optics, but the first version is no slouch and is certainly better than the K mount Takumar 135/2.5 and I would even think better than all of the 135/3.5 versions Pentax has had.
