Sigma 17-50 f2.8 Ex DC HSM Metadata in Lightroom

When I import the Raw DNG Photos taken with this lens in Lightroom it does not Show the Lens Model. I does show for all my other Pentax Lenses, and also for my Tamron 18-250 does anybody experience the same? is there any setting on LR or on the Camera that can fix this?

The lens ID is just a code number that the software has to interpret. You can see this if you look at the maker section of the EXIF with a viewer like PhotoMe or EXIFViewer. If the software does not recognize the code it will not be able to identify the lens. And some lenses, particularly Sigma, seem to reuse the ID codes so that different lenses get misidentified. This was rumored to be because Sigma reverse engineered the mount rather than licensing it, but I don't know if that is true.

In any case, make sure you have the latest software version of LR, they add lens codes on each update.

Yes the software is up to date, here one example of the Metadata for 3 lenses, on the sigma it does not appear what lens model/brand, the Sigma is the second metadata.

There are two possibilities:
1) The software does not have an entry in it's lens ID database for that lens
2) The lens itself is not supplying a proper ID code

Get a copy of Photome (it is free) and open a jpg taken straight from camera with it. Under the Manufacturer Notes section look for the entry "Lens ID" this should be a number. My DA*16-50 shows as 8+242+0+0. Then look for the entry "Lens Names(s) of the ID", this is the text entry that the software supplies to match the numeric lens ID. Let me know what these say.

Thanks!, I did download Photome and this is the result: On lens ID it says 8+25+0+0 and on lens name says Unknown (Lens Id: 8 25)

So now we know the lens is providing an ID. However, the software does not recognize it. I'm afraid that is all I can help with as I do not have that lens. Perhaps someone with that lens can tell us if they get the same ID number and if their software identifies it.

I did find this article which might have some information of interest: Batch editing Exif information with Exiftools and Apple automator: a case study on the Pentax K-5 camera / Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM lens combination | Semiocity

Thanks jatrax!, it looks like others had the same problem, can someone owner of the new Sigma 17-50 for Pentax (no stabilization) confirm?

I was hoping that someone that have the same Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 DC HSM non OS could confirm if they are having the same problem with the lens type on the exif?

I can't answer exactly, but it appears to me that my K5 with the older Sigma 17-50 with OS is not identified by the old version of Photoshop that I am using. The Pentax 12-24 is identified. I had tried out Lightroom last year, and I thought that Lightroom was able to identify the lens for corrections, but I can't verify that now.

I have Lightroom 4.4 and have the same issue. It does not automatically detect my Sigma 17-50 non-OS version. PhotoMe does have the following: Lens: Unknown (Lens ID: 8 25)
