Zoom or Telephoto Lens for K-x?

I am something of a newbie to photography and am keen on doing some sports photography. I am currently using a DA 18-55 and a DA 50-200 lenses with a 2x tele converter on my K-x but the results aren't all that good. I think this is due to the budget tele converter that use with them so am thinking of investing in a better lens but would like some advice on whether I should go for a zoom or telephoto lens and which particular lens I should look at? I don't have a big budget but am prepared to spend up to 150 even though I appreciate that will only get what I pay for in terms of the quality of lens I will get for my money.

If your budget allows, get a (used) DA55-300. Other alternatives are the sigma and the Tamron 70-300 (with the sigma preferred and the tammy as the cheapest) but the DA55-300 is the best in class regarding IQ and sharpness.

While the Sigma and Tamron already mentioned would certainly fit your budget, the Pentax has much better IQ in my experience. The cheap Sigma and Tamron lenses also have a rather bad reputation as to build quality. Lots of complaints about problems with fairly new lenses and people needing to send several lenses back till they got a good one - I don't have a reliable statistic on this, though, only the impression I got from searching the 'net.

Which sport(s) interest you, and how well do you know them?

For a sport that you know, where you can anticipate the action,
I've found that a manual focus prime may give you the best results,
especially in poor light.

You can get a lens like the excellent M100/2.8 within your budget.

Many thanks for the sound advice. Have just bought a used DA55-300 on ebay that has only been used a couple of times for 180.00.

Nice catch! Have fun with it. I used the 55-300 for quite some time as my only long lens. Last year I finally cracked and got the DA* 300, but I never really considered selling the zoom. The DA* is generally a step up in IQ (and in price ), but the 55-300 also can produce excellent results and is much smaller and lighter. Only today when I packed my bag for a short bicycle tour, I selected the zoom over the DA* because of the weight.
