You are almost certainly absolutely right. The following converters and prices still are / used to be available on Ricoh's Japanese online shop, at least they were last year. Note the prices (also interesting to note that the F AF 1.7X converter is the cheapest).

Now, 60,000 Japanese yens at today's exchange rate would be some 585 US dollars......

A better comparator may be pricing for current Nikon and Canon 1.4X TC's. B&H shows these are $400-500. Third party about half that. I expect the Pentax will be priced like other OEM TC's.

Earlier in the thread I mentioned that I own all the Pentax-A converters and that I wanted to do some L vs. S comparisons. Finally got around to what I think is a useful test of the 1.4x TCs, results here:

For the new 1.4 converter.From DigitalFotoNetz.de :: Thema anzeigen - PENTAX-DA AF-KONVERTER 1,4x + Flu Card im Kurztest

A few comments...
Here again a hard edge ..... CA's are absolutely scarce! The crispness is great given!
8a: 420mm, 1/400, ISO 640, f / 5.6

All in all I will probably buy the teleconverter immediately if he is in the display case and my budget allows!

Henry's didn't have it listed until today, $599CA. I hate buying when the price is still MSRP. I couldn't hold out for the K-3 price to drop, I snapped it up immediately. I was hoping to save $50-100 on the list price of the TC, but I'm going to Mexico at the end of March, I guess I will need the rear convertor for my trip.

What is the word with firmware? Does 1.02 give the HD TC compatibility, and not Tamron or Kenko TC's?

Price on RICOH/PENTAX's Japanese web-store is now YEN 54,640 (= approx. USD 535):

HD PENTAX-DA AF REAR CONVERTER 1.4X AW: ???????? | RICOH IMAGING

So, relative to that, international prices do not seem that "excessive".
