K50/f1.4 Opinion

I have couple of 50s ([FA/A/M]50/f1.4, [F/A/M]50/f1.7) and really don't need anymore 50s but just came across K50/1.4 with 52mm thread. My all 50s are 49mm thread and hence wondering how different this from M/A 50/f1.4 and should I pick that up. I saw nice K50 reviews but not the comparison.

Thanks
Yusuf

I believe it is the same design as the SMC Takumar and the M, just a different barrel design.

Yes, a quick glance at the tech specs here on PF and the construction details of Pentax's f/1.4 50s over at Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page seem to indicate they're all pretty much the same. Same number and grouping of elements, same weight with the exception of the FA 50mm 1.4 since that uses some plastic... Only that one with the slightly different filter thread size sticks out, numbers wise.

IMHO unless you're a collector and need a specimen of all the fast 50s you're probably fine. If you're a manual focus shooter maybe you notice differences in the dampening on the different lens generations. That's all I can think of!

I agree with others - the K is very close to the M for this lens.
I have a M and A 50 f1.4 and my testing has shown the A to the better lens optically (wide open anyway) - I really like it.

It all comes down to if you want to collect the set or not? If not what you have is as good as it gets.

Go back to the comment low voltage made. In my experience the Kseries lenses are better, I.e. more consistently damped than the M series. The difference is not much, but there is a slightly "better" feel to the K series lenses

I have the K55 1.8, the build and feel of the lens is outstanding. Better than the M series lenses but only just.

K50 1.4 is not the same as the M version, but very likely the SMC takumar with K mount.
Mechanically the K50 is superior to the M version (this is true for allmost all K lenses ).
The Takumars and most first generation K lenses use brass in their focus heliocoid, which is much better than aluminum.on aluminum.

There was in fact a modification to the optics between the K and the M series 50/1.4. While the number and groups of elements remained the same, there were some slight changes to their shape and spacing (likewise from the M to the A). The K has the exact same optics as the (higly acclaimed) SMC Takumar 50/1.4, and I belive (having tried the SMC through the A versions) that the SMC Tak and K are the best of the lot. In comparison with the M50/1.4 I do find there to be a difference in rendering and bokeh (I have never directly compared sharpness, but I would again give the edge to the K50), prefering the K50, which has always given me more of the 3D effect. I also find the bokeh on the M to be a little 'grittier', whereas the K seems smoother. If you already have the M and the A, I don't know if you really want another, but I would personally rather have the K and the A than the M and A.

Aye, pass on that one and get a SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.2 instead.

Comparison of Pentax Normal (50mm/55mm) K-mount lenses

Click on "Best Normal" in the left pane. There is a complete discussion of all the lenses through FA50/1.4. Seems FA and A are the winners at 1.4 overall but the K has the preferred 'sublime" total user experience due to superior construction.

I have or have had Super tak, S-M-C, SMC, K, M, A and FA 1.4's and K50/1.2 and M50/1.7 as well as Super Tak 55/1.8, SMC55/1.8 and K55/1.8. Of the lot I have kept the S-M-C, the K and the FA. All around I prefer the K, though the FA is knife sharp @f/4. I mostly use f/5.6 for creative reasons and they're all excellent at that aperture - so it is subjective.

I never had the positive experience so many describe with the M50/1.7..
