I found a Pentax 75-300 but not sure about it

I found a Pentax - 75-300mm F4.5-5.8 SMCP-FA J AL Zoom reasonable.
What is the diffenrence with this and the Pentax DA-55-300 that is coming out in May other than the 55mmand the 75mm? I'm just wondering if the Da is worth the $250 more. I'm not sure what all the Letters stand for so I'm asking.

Thanks all

as per a concurrent thread, you might also want to look at the Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 DI lens, and the Sigma APO version....both seem to get a lot of recommendations. I'm not sure what the pentax is going for but I literally just bought the 70-300 tamron 5 minutes ago for 130 brand new. I hear good things about the 50-300, but I have no direct knowledge of it.

That FAJ lens does not seem to be well regarded in this here territory, being "soft" at the longer end. Of course the simple answer to your question is 20mm (75-55). When I had the 18-55 and 80-320 I certainly missed the 55-80 range quite often.

I would try and avoid the FAJ it doesnt get much love, while for cheaper\similar price the Tamron Di\LD is a better performer. Not much can be said about the 55-300mm until its out...

Thanks

I don't know if anyone can say right now how the 55-300 will perform. as to the pentax, yes it is a little soft at the long end, but so are the Tamron and Sigma. I think people are expecting the Pentax to be a miracle lens, but it is very much only a $150 lens, just like the tamron and sigma. FWIW, two years ago I did a shootout between the Quantaray 70-300 (rebadged Tamron) and the FAJ 75-300 and found the FAJ to be a little better.

I thought the price on the DA 55-300 was somwhere around $300 on the roadmap? this would suggest a better lense than any of those mentioned here (sigma, tamron or FA).

yes, but that is still firmly in the "lower end" of telephoto lenses. Also, if that is the MSRP then I'd bet it'll be lower and closer to the price that the FAJ was when it was relatively new.
