Pentax lenses and DxOMark

While I was trying to find a decent review for a lens I shocked to find out that ratings of DxO for Pentax lenses were very low in comparison with other companies :

Any explanation !!
Am I missing something

This comes up regularly. You have to understand that a lens's score will be dependent on what camera it is mounted on. Mount a given lens on full frame camera and you get a sizable boost in that lens's score. Most of what goes into a DXO Mark score is the t score -- it's light transmission, with a little bit of resolution thrown in for good measure.

Anyway, hard to know how you compare a 18-250 zoom with a 35 f1.4 prime, but with DXO Mark's lens score you can do it with impunity.

Might it have something to do with sponsorship deals? or is that my cynical side escaping to the surface.

At the end of the day, do the lenses give you the results you want, cos that's all that really matters.

I have a hard time understanding DxO ratings sometimes as well.

For example, how can a Canon kit lens be sharper than Pentax 100mm macro?

Hard to say. But it scores a lot lower. Even the Canon 100 macro on a 7D scores lower than the Pentax 100 macro on a K5.

Generally it scores lower, yes, but how can a kit lens score higher (or even the same) as a macro lens? That sounds absurd to me.

It looks as though much of it may have to do with the sensor used...look at this random Nikon lens that gets a score of 40 when tested on a D800 but plummets to a 17 on an older body.
hmmmm...

Read what Perceptual Megapixels are:

DxOMark - Looking for new photo gear? DxOMark's Perceptual Megapixel can help you!

It's a lens-sensor combination, so the sensors need to be, at the very least, a similar number of megapixels.

If you switch the kit lens to Canon EOS 50D (15 MP), then the Pentax 100 Macro scores higher.

Here's a weird thing:

Compare the Pentax 100 Macro to a Canon 100 Macro and a Sony 100 Macro, (with cameras using similar MP sensors), and you'll see that the Sony scores better on everything except T-stop, and Canon has a much better T-stop, but other lower scores--they're all pretty similar. Yes, somehow, the Pentax "overall" score is massively higher (20 vs 13 vs 15).

Yes that is pretty weird - you would expect the Sony to score higher. According the help note the overall score is just and average but not in this case.

I'm just happy that my 35mm 1.4 is top of the list. Would like to see how they rate 31mm ltd.

You're better off looking at their profile charts than the insane scores.
