LBA Crisis! FA Limited Trio - What to offer?

Saw on Craigslist guy with a bunch of pentax gear, including the trio of FA lenses, with the prices being 77 1.8 limited for $750, 43 1.9 limited for $575 and 31 1.8 limited for $950. I can't drop $2200 on the trio both from justifying it to the wife, the bank account, or morally as I have the sigma 85, the limited DA 40 and 35 macro already. However, if I were to downgrade some gear, and I do have some "spare" money coming from a photo job soon, I'm wondering what you guys think.

First of all are his prices fair? Assuming they are, what would a reasonable offer for the trio be?

I don't want to just spend money foolishly, but I also don't want to pass up the opportunity to get my hands on these three legendary lenses.

Help!

those prices individually seems a bit high for used prices. these could often be had on the PF Forums marketplace for less.

for example, FA 77 (and a MIJ model at that) is $700 here:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/photographic-equipment-sale/234831-sale-f...40xs-more.html

FA 43 is available brand-new with warranty from B&H for $585:
Pentax smc FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited Series Autofocus Lens 20170 B&H

or $525 used
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/photographic-equipment-sale/236328-sale-p...m-limited.html

FA31 is $900 here:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/photographic-equipment-sale/235363-sale-f...2-8-macro.html

or available from KEH for $919 or $850 depending on condition:

Thanks. Still, $2100 (using your prices) is pricey and only a couple of hundred less than his combined. I suppose $1500 for the trio would be insulting, or a good place to start?

I also messed up and for some reason had it in my head that the FA limiteds were out of production, and totally forgot I got them priced from a local store in Vancouver for $1300/1100 for the 31 / 77. Still way more new, but not nearly the "omg these are only on the used market and I may never find them again" crisis I thought originally.

Nope, just my own fading (apparently) memory. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get my hands on these babies, but if I can just sell a kidney or something and buy them new from the store (after getting them special ordered in cause of course no one actually carries pentax stuff) then it's not quite as desparate a situation

$1500 would probably be a bit insulting and low-ball. the FA 31 alone is worth at least $800 in resale value (depending on condition) and the FA 77 is routinely over $600, while FA43 is over $400. So at best, start at $1800 and see if you can come to some middle-ground compromise.

I disagree with his strategy.

I might start at $1500... maybe $1600 if you want a little less risk of being insulting.

You can't start at $1800, because you want to end up there.

OTOH, you probably won't get them from this person for less than $2100, because that's how most of these people are. They know what they could get from eBay, and they're posting on Craigslist because that's not good enough for them, and/or they don't want to pay eBay & PayPal fees. There's a guy on my local Craigslist who's been listing a Minolta 200/2.8 lens (and a bunch of other stuff) for AGES (at least a full year), and still won't budge $1 on the price. Maybe if I wait long enough their market value will go up enough that his price will actually be cheap instead of $100 over KEH...

You could also just buy one or two of the FA limiteds right now. You already have DA 40 and DA 35 macro and the Sigma 85; you may not need FA 43 and FA 77 right away. So focus your attention on that FA 31... or just skip Craigslist entirely and get your gear from the PF Marketplace!

Yep, I'm a pretty terrible bargainer! At the same time, I feel like too low an offer is insulting and the seller may not want to do any further business with that low baller. You don't want to piss the seller off from the get-go. At least give him a reasonable offer. And you're right, since it's craigslist, he's keeping more cash without having to eat the ebay or paypal fees or shipping costs. So maybe he would be willing to come down in price a bit.

Occasionally, if you're diligent, someone posts an amazing deal on an FA limited, here, on the forums. Just be patient. Most of the sellers here are quite reputable, almost as a rule. I'd take 76's advice and grab the 31.

The 31 is pretty close to the 35 though, even with the extra stop (but no macro). I do mostly portraits and people so the 77 seems like a better fit, and in theory I wouldn't have to be in the next city to get a full body shot like I do with the 85

Luckily I don't *need* any of these lenses, as I have the two DA* lenses, so I have the full range of 16-135 covered at 2.8. Just something about "FA Limited" makes me want to throw money out of my bank account

Sell DA 40mm and get FA 43mm. Sell Sigma 85 and get FA 77. Then you're done. I agree you could probably just stick with the DA 35 macro instead of the FA 31.

Someone is selling a 77, MIJ, for 660, in the market. The Sigma 85/1.4 is no slouch, however. I think Adam said it's just about as good as the FA*85/1.4. 77 vs 85 isn't going to change your shooting distance all that much. Maybe you really want a DA*55/1.4.

Luckily he rejected my lowball offer anyway, and has someone interested in the 77 anyway Guess I'll have to be happy with the gear I have already
