31 Ltd and the K 28 3.5

Hi guys,

I've read a lot of praises for the 31 ltd...

For those of you guys who owned/tried both the 31 ltd and the K 28 3.5, can anyone compare the Pros and Cons of each lens not taking into account auto focus and wider apertures of the 31? I have the 28 3.5 and i know it's worth every penny spent on it but no access to the 31 though...

Thanks in advance guys...

However good or bad is the comparison, once you have FA31 in your mind, you will always feel a need, so get it now than the later

Anyway, you are eliminating the biggest factor - aperture. I don't have K28 but have M28 but never done direct comparison with FA31. I use M28 for landscape stopped down @f8 & always prefer it over FA31 not only due to the wider FOV but the smaller size. However, if it's street/portraits, it's going to be FA31 (or other) but not the M28/3.5 as I mostly shoot at larger aperture.

The obvious is the large difference in price. I don't have the 31. I do have the K28/3.5. It is an excellent lens but I use it rarely as I also have the K30/2.8, which for me just has that something about it. It is the K30 that will save me from buying the 31.

Any of the old 28's are good lenses and will produce great images when used appropriately. The 31 has earned it's reputation and quite frankly if cost were not an issue, there would not be the debate that goes on. Prior to acquiring my copy, I had the m28(for 30+ years) and FA28 (autofocus) and was happy. The FA31 is the best lens I have had the privilege to use and I have had a lot of very good lenses. My only regret was that I waited so long to get it.

+1. K30/2.8 is highly recommended but the price is pretty high these days.

I have a Takumar 28/3.5 which I like and use quite a bit. When I nail the focus, I think the IQ holds up to any other lens in the size range. I think auto focus and aperture are the principal reasons to spend the bucks on the FA31 and something you have to take into account. I use my 28 as a walk around, usually outside on sunny days and stopped down to f/8- f/11. Focusing isn't too critical at those apertures. Even with my senior citizen eyes, I can usually get good shots. If that's what you want an FA31 for, then you are wasting good money.
