Autofocus lenses for the **ist DS F2 or more

I'm after a F2 or greater aperture lens that works with autofocus on my **ist DS. I'm using an SMC 50mm M series manual focus for now. I know the following Pentax lenses will work with autofocus: DA Series, KAF2 / KAF3, DA L, KAF2, D-FA, KAF2, FA J, FA, F, A - Pentax lenses seem quite hard to source however, can anyone recommend alternatives? Of course I'd love the F0.7 lens that Kubrick used on Barry Lyndon but NASA are too expensive. Plus it's manual.

If looking at brand new the DAL 50mm F1.8 should work.
As should the DA* 50mm F1.4 (assumign it's not SDM only)

Pretty much any Pentax AF lens will work as long as it's got screw AF (I'm pretty sure ALL Pentax AF lenses (ignoring the one from the ME-F) used this system, just the recent ones also had inbuilt motors)

The DA * 55 f/1.4 does not have screwdrive. I don't know any other that doesn't, but I've had some clutch issues with my DA * 60-250 f/4 when using it on screwdrive film cameras. So personally, I'd recommend non-SDM lenses for the *ist D.

Welcome to the Pentax Forums! Wide aperture is certainly a nice thing, but be prepared to be disappointed when using a fast lens wide open with auto-focus. Shallow DOF and AF do not mix well for many subjects. As for the Barry Lyndon lens...my understanding is that was all done with manual focus using traditional focus pull (zone focus, not TTL) and was very challenging for the fellow tasked with the job.

Back to your original question...The lens review database on this site is an excellent resource. I think you may find that the number of screw drive AF lenses in K-mount f/2 and faster is pretty limited. There are the Pentax fast-50s (DA, F and FA series), the FA limited series, FA 35/2, FA* 24/2, FA* 85/1.4 and recent offerings from Sigma and I think that is about it.

Steve

Thank you for your replies, the lens options and the AF issue at higher apertures is good to know. I really should get a split focus system installed.

The Pentax Camera Lens Compatibility Chart

Random bushes

F2 isn't bad, here are some random bushes I snapped earlier - bokeh is ok, the 50mm SMC F1.4 is my next purchase.
