Vivitar 120-600mm f 5.6-8... Is this a good lens?

I have an opportunity to buy this old Vivitar 120-600mm f5.6-8 in K mount.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with this lens? Is it worth having?
I could not see one on ebay currently.
Does anyone know what one in average condition would be worth in todays market?

I see there in one post in the lens review section. Based on this it would seem like a pretty good lens to have.

Thanks for the advice!

I don't know the lens but I know the forum. No one gives a lens a rating under5. So you can safely subtract the five unused ratings points and get a more reasonable rating.

Using that
Sharpness 3 out of 5
Aberrations 3 out of 5
Bokeh 4 out of 5
Handling 2 out of 5
Value 4 out of 5.

If the price is right I might buy it... 5.6 to 8 is a decent range for a 120 to 600 and, what else can you get that's anything like it?

I believe you have to hack off the flange on the mount for modern Pentax cameras -- some of the old Vivs are like that. I wouldn't pay more than $200 for it (in good shape, clean glass, everything working), but $150 would be better. (And I've seen them go for less then $100 for other mounts). I examined one in Canon mount once -- it is a monster. If you start getting up towards $300 or more, I would gravitate then towards the Tamron Adaptall SP 200-500/5.6 (model 31A, not any of the earlier ones) as better choice for an older super-telezoom. (Also a monster -- either one is a tripod only lens).

I've only seen example shots from the Viv, but it seems pretty decent. You will get purple fringing and the like from any of those old zooms though.

I believe it is a Kobori made lens, so there is a good chance of it having an oversized shield around the aperture lever. I wouldn't say "hack off" though, they just unscrew, you can choose to trim it to normal size or just leave it off entirely.

Fair enough. In any case, examine before mounting!

Well I have this lens on loan for a test drive. What a monster! Mounted to my K-30 it looks like it would attract a lot of attention in public
I took the flange off as suggested. A few test shots and I can see this at 600mm is tripod only.

I did notice the purple fringing mentioned. What is the best way to remove that? I have LR5, is there a built-in feature for correcting PF?

At twice the length as my 70-300mm I think I want to keep this lens even though it would not see a lot of use.

Thanks as always for the great advice!
