Never heard of a smc-m 50n 2.8, so it must be extremely rare, and rare lenses can be extremely expensive.

Um, what lens are you talking about?
There are a couple M series 50mm lenses, but none are f2.8.
Some 50mm lenses have f2.8 aperture, and those are macro lenses. Not sure you need macro, that is up to you to determine.
Check out 50mm Pentax lenses here or manually search the lens review database. This database includes an average on how much people paid for the lens when they bought it - its not the perfect number, but usually it a good place to start.
You can get a very good M 50mm f1.7 for around $70 usd. Not sure how much the macro lenses go for, they are a little rarer, because they are a specialty lens.

Nope. M 28mm f/2.8s seemingly breed themselves. $40 sounds more appropriate.

I think so.

Interested in others' opinions, though.

Its 30 years old, maybe never used, but I would not call it new.
So the usual old age problems like oil on the aperture blades can be the case, I would not pay much for this lens.

Nope, its a couple decades old. Older than many members on this forum! Even if its untouched and mint - its not new. For around 200 you can get a brand new DA 35mm or DA 40mm XS or DA 50mm f1.8, with full automation.
The 28mm you mentioned goes for much less in the marketplace and the ebays. But sure, if you want to buy from that friend of yours, and you trust them, and there is no shipping to pay.. go ahead. As long as you don't regret it. From a financial standpoint, you can probably get a better deal.

Edit: Though, it is true that in the last few years, most old manual Pentax lenses have gone up in price.

Most M28 2.8 on ebay ranges from $80-120 in excellent condition as described. Although i have ordered a brand new vivitar 28mm 2.8 Macro, i still feel lacking cause i find pentax made lens superior...thats why im tempted to buy this M28 2.8 from pentax... i can afford it, but im definitely a wise buyer, i wouldn't get an item that's not worth the price.. STILL, very tempted!

Surely those prices are not from searching eBay's completed listings.

Those are the BIN prices, perhaps? A Pentax-M 28/2.8 is worth about $40 USD in excellent condition on the U.S. market. Price new back-in-the-day was about the same. It was sort of a budget lens.

Errrrkkkkkchchch!!!! Halt!!! I just got a huge surprise when I looked up the current KEH prices for M 28/2.8. Has this lens suddenly become a cult classic or something? They want $116 USD for one in ex condition. Normally the KEH prices represent the high end + another 10% for convenience. This is outrageous.

A Tamron Adaptall-2 28/2.5 can be had for about $55 USD with PK adapter in ex condition or keep your Vivitar 28/2.8. Both are better lenses than the M 28/2.8.
