FA 31 or DA*16-50

All things being equal in price, which lens would YOU choose, The FA 31 or the DA*16-50?

Well, its like trying to choose between pliers and a handsaw... But do you need to cut wood or wire?

Also, I think Ive read this phrase on this forum: "A prime cannot replace zoom as much as a zoom cannot replace a prime"

That said, Id choose the 16-50. Id even get the 16-50 if I had the 31.

Tough one, I would love the wide angle (my widest is a 17-28 fisheye) and WR of the 16-50 but at the same time I haven't been impressed by 97% of the pics I've seen taken with the lens, it seems to have some kind of glow to it that I dislike. The 31 on the other hand feels like a must have lens but the same time I think it's a bad focal length for me as I like 20 and 55 but struggles a bit in between. Logically I "need" the 16-50 but if I learn to use 31mm the limited would probably impress me more.

I just say, buy your zooms first... buy your primes where you need them. But, in this case I'd get the 31. I'm not sure I'll ever wnat the 16-50, I have the Tamron 17-50 and the 18-135 to cover it's range in a WR lens. The lens just seems to me kind of a red haired orphan. The 31 on the other hand, it's just a have to have lens in a lot of ways. Sharp, great bokeh, better than any zoom. A great example of why you get a prime instead of a zoom. These days there aren't a lot of older primes that hold up to modern zooms.

I owned the 16-50 and sold it. Not a fan for that lens.

So my choice is and would be the FA31mm. Basicly all you need.

I have the FA 31 and the FA 43 like you. Definitely feel the 31 takes a while to get used to...but once you do it is a crazy good lens. Very versatile - ultra sharp where you need it, unbelievably smooth bokeh for artsy stuff. I can't say I use it as much as the 43 due to its size, but overall a super fun lens to have.

The FA31 is a better lens, while the DA*16-50 is more versatile (and no slouch). Your call.
Get both, but you knew I'd say that

It depends on your other lenses. If you have nothing, I'd buy neither to start with. If you have nothing, I would choose a decent zoom over an excellent prime for the focal length range. If you are a pixel peeper, then there is no answer. I'd recommend a 17-70 of some type and a 55-300 for the price of either of the others.

I own the FA 31 and not the 16-50, I would have the 16-50 if it were not for the failing AF.

To me the FA 31 is for very specific purposes and not a general lens. It is equivalent to a 40mm in the 35mm film days and what I photographed as an 80mm on my 2and1/4. FA 31 is brilliant lens for taking gorgeous photos.

I probably need a really good WR 16-50 more than a FA 31as I do mostly outdoors. I have decided to wait for the new set of lenses to come out if ever to get a good quality WR. In the meantime I have a 17-50 sigma for half the price.

So you never felt the need to dump the FA 43 once you acquired the FA 31? Because right now the FA 43 is my go to lens. I tend to like the longer focal length lenses including the DA*50-135 over the wide angles.

Funny you should ask because I was looking into both those lenses myself. I have a 17-70 which I like a lot but I want to get a faster lens to brighten the image in my viewfinder mostly.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't buy the DA*16-50. Its not rated highly enough for my liking - Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM - Review / Test Report

The 17-70 is more highly rated - Pentax SMC DA 17-70mm f/4 AL [IF] SDM - Review / Test Report - but of course is not as fast

I would love to get the FA31 but its super expensive ~$1200.00! So if you have the money it would seem to be an ideal all around lens.

I guess I would keep an eye out for a better solution as far as a zoom lens goes.

If I had no lenses, I would get the FA31 and use my present DA*60-250 if I want to get closer.

Hey,
I too faced this decision and in the end I purchased the 16-50 (first). I have since acquired a 31mm (LBA) and it's a great lens too. Like previously mentioned they are quite different. In my case I use the 31mm to experiment with dof and take on a casual outing where the camera is in turn less obtrusive. When doing landscaping or travel (to places I haven't been) I constantly reach for the 16-50. I may return with the 31mm but I always take the 16-50 to scope an area out. With bounce flash, great build quality, weather resistance and surprisingly nice bokeh the 16-50 lens is very versatile! Also when stopped down (5.6 - 9) for landscapes it truly shows awesome colours. I use a hi-tech filter system with my 16-50 further increasing its versatility. I have experienced SDM fail on my 50-135 but never on the 16-50 (could be a new batch). Also the 16-50 seems to focus much faster than my da* 50-135 and 55 1.4 SDM lenses. My number one complaint about both lenses is that they are prone to flare. The 31mm in this regard can produce nice artistic flare where the 16-50 just creates tinted shading. This can be avoided (currently waiting to buy a da 15 ltd ) however I'm sure you will enjoy either lens. The choice largely lies in what type of photography you are into. Goodluck mate!
Cheers.
Dan

I had a 16-50 and sold it. My WR zoom is the 18-135 for versatility. I have the FA 31 and four DA Limiteds plus three other primes which Give me my best results.

Your question to choose between the zoom and the 31 is puzzling as they are totally different types of lenses. At its focal length, the 31 is the best there is hands down. I have eight primes for the best quality at various focal lengths. I have several zoom lenses for various tasks, but if maximum IQ is my goal, bring on the primes. As for the 31, it is the best lens I have and the 16-50 was not. I had a Tamron 17-50 which was very good, but sold it because I preferred shooting with primes. I usually have my two camera bodies with the two lenses I expect to use the most, most of the time that is two primes.

+1, I am also not a fan of 16-50, I sold it in favour of Tamron 17-50 for which I have nothing but the praise.

FA31 is a brilliant lens but mine remains mostly unused as I tend to use Sigma 30 more often. Hope to use FA31 on FF though.
