HD DA vs SMC DA

Hello there, can you please explain the differences between the new HD DA and older SMC DA lenses? This may help me with a up coming purchase. Thank you.

The HD coating does a better job of reducing ghosting and suppressing flare. It's comparable to Nikon's nano crystal coat, if you're familiar with that.

It is also cheaper and easier to make. Fungus will love it

The new lenses also have curved aperture blades which in the case of the Da15 appears to reduce the cool starburst effect that people love. The original 15ltd may in fact be better. For the other lenses the curved blade are probably a slight improvement as it should theoretically improve Bokeh. Time will tell

fungus will love it, why? more than the SMC DA ?

yes time will tell, i think we really need good reviews and sample images from the new lenses, why are there few to none? Surely Ricoh would promote the new lenses.

Rob, how do you get on with the 43 and 55 are they close to each other in focal length or do they have unique characteristics

Official release says the rounded apertures show there effect between f/4 and f/5.6 for the HD DA15. This is true for any lens with rounded aperture blades. (range depends on the lens). So my guess is that when stopping down beyond f/5.6, the aperture blades will behave the same ways as in the SMC DA15.. Rounded aperture will give better OoF rendition for close focus and aperture between f/4 and f/5.6. That´s all

Same with the DA21.

The HD coating was probably released to squeeze as much resolution as possible from the limiteds. A clever move given the new 24 MP sensor.
