I for one would like to see Pentax equip the da limiteds with silent AF motors without making them much (if any) bigger.
I'd prefer WR in the DA Limited before SDM, but both would of course be nice. That being said, AF with the DA limited is quite silent given the small weight, and really fast.

I think Pentax could/should have released a cheaper DA 28
I think this would make more sense than a 28 limited, considering that there's already a 21 and a 31. A 28 to match the 35 and 50 DA-L would be logical.

You are probably correct in assuming they want to protect the FA31mm
They didn't protect the FA43/1.9 (> DA40/2.8) and the FA77 (> DA70/2.4), a DA28/2.8 would fit the same pattern (slightly wider, ~1 stop slower, (officially) APS-C only)

I would hate for it to be APS-C only, though. With an FF-camera on the way, it would be great if they re"optimized" the DA40 & DA70 for FF and a FF-compatible DA28 would complete a great pancake-kit. Looking at the small 28s in Pentax' past, making it a FF-design can't be that hard.
I'd buy a DFA28/2.8 Ltd. in an instant, I don't feel that way about the DA21 although I really like the FOV on APS-C.

A DA30/1.4 Limited however would be another matter...

If they're going to add WR and/or SDM/DC/whateverelse to any of the Limiteds, they should probably start with the FAs. Those are larger and more expensive anyway and they could use new siblings, too (24/1.8 & 55/1.2 would be my favourites).

Here's a prime roadmap I could get behind:
D-FA 24/2.8 - D-FA 35/2.4 - D-FA 50/1.8 - D-FA 85/1.8
D-FA 28/2.8 Ltd., D-FA 40/2.8 Ltd., D-FA 70/2.4 Ltd.
D-FA* 24/1.8 Ltd., D-FA* 31/1.8 Ltd., D-FA* 43/1.9 Ltd., D-FA* 55/1.2 Ltd., D-FA* 77/1.8 Ltd.

relabeled
relabeled and WR added (and maybe DC?)
relabeled and optimized for FF
new design (maybe based on an old one)

regards
Jan

Nickpicking here, but it would probably be a DA* 30 f1.4 WR, more in the line of the 55 instead of the limiteds.

The problem is Pentax has at least 3 different levels of primes. While together they cover a most focal length needs, individually there are large holes. Th eOP is lamenting a lack of 28, however the is a 31mm option but only in the "Pro" level which is an expensive option.

"Consumer" Level: DA plastics
"Prosumer" Level: DA limiteds, FA non-limiteds, and DFA macros
"Pro" level: FA limiteds & DA* primes
Not really sure I would try and split DA LTD and FA LTD series out as Prosumer or Pro Level. Unless you are shooting film.

Pentax has tried to make APS-C lenses that reflect the 1.5x FOV differential and so you have the DA15mm (which is your FF 21mm) and the DA21mm (which is your FF30-31mm) no 18mm (FF 27-28mm) and no 24mm (FF 35-36mm) . You are probably correct in assuming they want to protect the FA31mm and so I advise waiting for that DA Limited zoom on the road-map (which should be along very soon) or buying the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 zoom when it becomes available.
The lack of an 18mm prime is especially disappointing to me because both the GXR and GR use that focal length

A DA*30mm f1.4 made it to the 2008 roadmap before it crashed and burned.

You've never tried a Limited zoom.
I guess OP's answer would be, you've never tried a Limited PANCAKE/comparatively small to an A28/2.8 sized zoom maxing out at f/2.8...

Oh wait... It doesn't exist, does it?

If the Limited zoom from the roadmap ends up being a reworked FA 20-35,
it will be about twice the length of the A28/2.8.

Fast 24 and a new, fast FF 35 (FA35 is not available everywhere and in Europe, when available, topping over 1,000 EUR now).
