Pentax SMC M 28mm F2: Are there different versions of this lens?

I recently purchased from KEH a Pentax SMC M 28mm F2. I'm hoping this is the lens that was made by Zeiss with the floating element. However, I've heard rumors now that the M series lens is different than an earlier lens, which is the better one that I am looking for.

Does anyone know details about this lens and the different versions, and the quality of these versions?

The M version has a different optical formula, and no floating elements.

An excellent resource for such info is Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page.

Thanks. I noticed this forum has the M series lens rated very highly at 9.40. Is it your understanding that the M series is still a very, very sharp lens...or perhaps are those reviews actually for the earlier model?

The two lenses are quite different, so I doubt anyone on the forums would mistake them in doing a review. The M 28/2 is supposed to be quite good, and is smaller and lighter than the earlier "K" 28/2. You may find it does quite well for you.

The two lenses are indeed quite different, especially in size.

I got both lenses and can assure you, both are extremely good, I never came around doing a detailed comparison, but from normal use I'd say the M is not inferior to the K in sharpness and general IQ. I think the lenses have quite a different character, the K's colours seems to be a bit cooler, and it has a nicer "3D" look and a fascinating bokeh, but that's all rather subjective.

I thought about selling the M after I found the K but couldn't really part with it. It produces great images and the small size definitely is a plus.

In short: Use the M28/2 to take a few pictures instead of worrying about not having the K, it is an excellent lens!

From Yoshihiko Takinami's resolution tests the M28/2 has exceptional center sharpness from wide open and is as sharp or sharper than the K version at most apertures.

There is also an “A” version which is the same as the M28/2.
The biggest difference you are going to find with the K28/2 over the others is the close focusing (better minimum distance) and the 3D effect. (More lens elements/groups)
Sharpness wise you will not find much difference between the three and they will also be very close if you shoot at infinity.
