so bad that I only have a k-5 ... :-(
If you know anyone in Seattle with a K10D or one of the other bodies mentioned in the thread, you might be able to borrow it or hire it. I borrowed one from a friend and my DA*16-50 has never looked back since it re-embraced the screw drive.

Maybe the K-3 will have debug mode??

My virtually brand new Pentax 16-50 also went dead a few weeks ago. I took out my trusty K20D, and did the software change as listed in this forum (it's easy), and now have an awesome, reliable screw drive Pentax 16-50. The screw drive on the lenses is remarkably quiet, so goodbye always failing SDM. If you have a nice 50-135, don't repair it.....fix it permanently like I did for screw drive. You could buy an older body, for example. If you repair the lens, and they don't mess it up, I would have NO confidence that it will work past another year or two.

and then today, it totally doesn't work...

I am really unhappy for a $1000 purchase like this. Had it brand new for only 1.5 years and I barely used it

really unhappy. I was thinking of getting a K-3, but now all of sudden I am not sure whether I should stick with RP

Does anyone know whether sending back for service solve the problem? Or the issue comes back soon even after serviced?
Do the K3, send the lens to United in Chicago. They are very good. You will be thrilled...

Convert to Screwdrive

My 16-50 HSM died at about the same length of time. I converted it to screwdrive, and it works fantastic. Both these lenses should of been screwdrive, IMO, and they would sell great. My 16-50 is very reasonably quiet without HSM and the AF seems faster and more assured, plus I can tell when it locks on focus easily.

Sending for repairs is always a risk iMO.

When my first 50-135 SDM failed it also jammed manual focus. Reverting to screw drive sounds okay but will it work if MF is jammed?
