I appreciate the OP doesn't want a fish-eye, but even with a rectilinear ultra-wide angle you'll have problems with perspective distortion between parts of the subject that are different distances from the camera, especially at very short (cramped) subject distances. I have the DA10-17 FE and would agree that at 17mm you can hide the FE effect if you're careful (and the subject is sympathetic to do so).

And the kit DA18-55 is sharper at 18mm than the DA10-17 at 17mm

As for de-fishing - it can work, if you don't look too closely at the results - Flickr Search: defished (a mix of de-fished DA10-17 and Samyang 8mm FE).

the Bower (Also sold under brands Samyang, ProOptic, Rokinon, Vivitar, and others) is manual focus only and has no digital contacts for your camera.
Yes, the Bower 14/2.8 is manual focus, but in Pentax mount it definitely has the "A" contacts and is compatible with all exposure modes on all K-mount Pentax cameras.

To the OP...Do consider a fisheye. Yes, you may have curved lines, but the good news is that you won't have smeared or squished heads. The amazing thing is that most people don't expect lines to be straight on what is obviously an ultra-wide-angle shot, but they do expect that their brother not look like an alien.

As for volume anamorphosis (distortion of proportions due to perspective), there are a few tricks that can be done in PP, but in the end the best solution is simply increasing the camera-to-subject distance.

I would be the first to tell anybody to not buy one (or any other fish eye lens) with the idea that you can "de-fish" your shot in PP. You won't be happy with the results.
...and I would be the second person to say so. De-fishing can be done with minimum loss of quality, but you end up sacrificing a LOT of image and much of the wide FOV to make it happen. The key to working with a fisheye is to frame your subject carefully and work WITH the circular projection.
