I know the hate for Ken Rockwell runs deep, but as he says, most modern SLR kit lenses are plenty sharp. The tool behind the camera is another story.

I would have to say that 9.5 of 10 of lens sharpness complaint posts on this site fall into that category. The other 0.5 are either camera motion or a faulty lens.

As for the 18-55 kit and image quality, I would refer the reader to the kit lens club thread on this site:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/lens-clubs/45425-kit-lens-club.html

or just take a gander at photos I have taken with the 18-55/3.5-5.6 v1 on my Flickr account:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=28796087@N02&q=18-55

A few of my shots are a little soft, but those are generally at 55mm or have some camera motion.

Hello,

What I managed to do with this lens is:

As with all lens image quality threads, there is the inevitable post of the outsized image to show how sharp something can be. For the record, it is more effective to post a reasonable sized version (say 800 px on the long axis) and a link to the full-resolution version. Another alternative is to provide a full-resolution crop of reasonable dimensions.

here is a 100% crop (712 x 566) of the focused area of a 4936 x 3272 image from a k-30 using the 18-55mm wr lens. the attachment uploader has compressed it a little, but, you can still see that this lens can produce a sharp image depending on the setting and light.
Here is a link to the full size image: All sizes | 1855kitlens | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Attachment manager will not let me attach a RAW file but i will gladly send it to any who would like.

Having a look at RAW, unedited images might even be better. I think a lot of the "good" images shown, might be due to superior editing skills, and not a true reflection of what the lens are capable of, especially if you start comparing to other lenses with similar focal range

Right, both of the original images were unedited except to scale them down for posting in the forum.

Hello,

Search for the name in the copyright, enter flickr and you' ll have all the `full sized` photos you' d want to check out from me.
They are processed from the raw files, except the one with the Dome Church- that one is a .jpeg.

All the best!

IMO the 18-55mm is quite a poor lens and badly in need of a re-fresh. The best copy I tried was years ago with a ist DL2 and that was not bad, nothing great but passable at best.
K-x and K-r bodies had quite awful kit lenses ok ish wide end, but terrible above 35mm and 55mm was soft as hell never really getting sharp edge to edge even stopped right down.

My advice is to ignore the kit lens. Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 destroys the Pentax kit lens and it's quite a reasonable cost lens too. Honestly it's so much sharper the difference is quite massive.
I would not buy a body with a kit lens, save your cash for something better than the soft kit lens.

So it looks like the consensus is that the 18-55 in general is either great or crap or okay. Seems like there is either a quality control issue, or a lot of bias.

Since this lens was manufactured in huge quantities over the years, I think sample variation is a big factor. All the examples I've used ran from decent to pretty good. I've never used a "stellar" one or a "crap" one.

Maybe my expectations are way too low, but I still like mine!! Of course my sigma 28-105 uc-II is a total piece-o-crap, but I still like it too! Wait til they release the version with Rico stamped on it, then we will see the fur fly!!!

Kit lenses are notorious for QC variation and across all the main makers.
Honestly you get what you pay for mostly, that's why kit lenses are cheap or free with a body (or not much cost)
The Nikkor 18-55mm sucks on the 24mp bodies...you just need better glass for the newer sensors 16mp+

Years ago an ok ish Pentax 18-55mm looked ok at 6mp, nowadays it's pretty ho hum at higher resolution

Are you calling Ken Rockwell a tool?

And likely not too sharp, either.
