I really don't expect prime-like results from an inexpensive kit zoom. All lenses, even primes, have their strengths & weaknesses. With a little care, you can usually get pretty good images from the 18-55. For a lot of "regular folks" (not enthusiasts or many PF members), the kit lens may be one of their only lenses, so it has to be versatile enough to cover many shooting situations. And a lot of those people are probably perfectly happy with the kit lens for family outings & vacation shots.
