DA* or DA

I am waiting for my new K3, I've decided to upgrade my lens. For my first one I'm still undecided between a 17-50 mm 2.8 or the 50-135 mm 2.8, and also do I get a DA or a DA*. Are they really worth the difference in price?

People raved about the IQ of the DA* 50-135 so i bought one. Uhhhhh they were right. It has great image quality. On par with my FA 43. The kit lens is a DA but so are the limiteds. Which DA,s are you talking about?

Not sure what you mean with da vs da*, as there no single lens comes in both flavors. Pentax's current lineup is diverse so I'd suggest starting with user reviews.

Sorry you guys, I did not study hard enough and did not realize that the f2.8 only come in limited lens. I wish I could try a limited lens, But here in Quebec, store dont keep Pentax limited lens in stock. So far this one is really tempting (Pentax DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM) for 1,122.99$.

Congratulations on your K-3! On this forum, the DA* 50-135mm is really beloved!
The Pentax 16-50mm not so much. If you want a 17-50mm, take a look at the Sigma or Tamron. The review of these is here: DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison - Introduction - PentaxForums.com

With Pentax, the prime lenses (fixed focal length) are the most attractive, because they are small and make beautiful photos! 40mm limited, 15mm limited.. can't go wrong.

And the user lens reviews can be found here: Pentax Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Thanks for the input, Never tought the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8, that I already own could rival the Pentax-DA-Star-16-50mm-F2.8-SDM-Zoom-Lens on image quality.
So the SMC-Pentax-DA-Star-50-135mm-F2.8-SDM-Zoom-Lens is looking very tasty

Ps : Dont you hate owning a k3 camera, that is sitting somewhere in the world on a shelf, but at your home

Well, what lens(es) do you already have, and what do you dislike about them?

Hi,
i also live in Montreal , so you certainly visited L.L. Lozeau, they have some Pentax lenses in the store but it varies from time to time. I agree with the DA*50-135mm, it's a great lens.

Tamron 17*50mm f2.8, Tamron 90mm f2.8 and a Pentax 50-200 f4-5.6.
Not fast lens.

I am also tempted by the smc PENTAX DA★ 60-250mm F4 ED[IF] SDM

Gosselin will order any lens for you and let you experiment before you purchase. Or you can visit web stores like Henry's, Vistek, Cameradanada, or *my favourite) prodigital2000 on eBay.

Well there's your answer. Since you already have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, I don't think there is too much reason to get the Pentax DA* 16-50. I don't have either of those, but from what I've read, the Pentax 2.8 is not considered all that much better than the Tamron, if at all.

The only lens you seem you want to replace is the 50-200 because it is slow. So go the 60-250. The 50-135 is faster but you already have the 90. .
