FWIW, a friend w/ a D80 tried the micromotor version of the Tamron 28-75 and it seemed to randomly BF/FF as well.
Hopefully, screw drive is better.
On a positive note, the review did say image quality is comparable (when it focused right :-) to the Canon 70-200/2.8 and gives the Nikon 70-200VR (which isn't very good on a FF camera) a run for the money on APS-C...

I love this
Tamron 70-200 2.8 / the zoo on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

It's at 200mm end at f2.8. Lovely bokeh, though a little soft to some. But to me it's just perfect^^ Now just hope the reported random FF/BF can be fixed by Tamron for Pentax mount or adjusted by K20D AF option^^

Looks like the DPR Sigma HSM 70-200/2.8 review is out and it has focus issues as well :-P
Hope Tamron's lens works ok on the screw drive bodies like Pentax/Sony :-P

i read that review, too, but i'm not sure that the "focus" issues are such a problem in most situations. the issue - unlike the tamron - isn't the accuracy of the focusing system as such, but rather focus-shift caused by CA at close distances. at really close distances, the centre of frame is in a slightly different focus plane to the corners of the frame.

sigma may have exacerbated the problem by labelling the lens as a Macro, thereby encouraging people to use it in a mode that will actually show it's flaws.

if i read that review correctly, the focus "issues" won't really exist for me if i'm shooting team sports at moderate to longer distances, and i would still get the benefit of HSM focusing? just don't expect to use it as a macro?

at longer distances, it may or may not matter since the DOF is greater. If you looked carefully, you might think it's not as sharp as it could be because it BF or FF at those specific focal lengths. That's how I understood it at least.
Of course that's compared to the Tamron which apparently is totally random no matter what focal length :-P

Having seen the DP reviews of both the Tamron and the Sigma I have to say my LBA for either has subsided. If I were to buy it would only be after seeing a bunch of 'real' user pix sufficient to offset the pro-opinions............and then there's the 60-250 someday, maybe.............
