Vivitar 70-150 f/3.8 Kiron Test Shots

Ever since I sold my copy of Vivitar "Series 1" 70-210 f/3.5 from Kiron, I missed the Kiron quality in a long zoom and I have good impression on Kiron with two lens that I have

And I subsequently bought a Vivitar 70-150 f/3.8 also from Kiron and manage to test the lens in this weekend taking street photos with the lens and my K100D.

Drummer in action

Out of my test shots, my favorite has been taking snapshots on a drummer performing in the Ferry Building in San Francisco. I did the composition in a hurry and I paid the price in clipping his hand and drum sticks.

Do anyone have a favorite Vivitar Kiron lens to share? Please comment if you have Vivitar (made from Kiron starting with 22 in serial number ) 24mm/28/28-105/35-135/28-210.

Thanks,
Hin

.

Hinman, great great shots there. In that first shot Johnny Depp is looking pretty haggard, I think he should get some rest!

I had but sold a screw-mount Vivitar 200mm made by Kiron, and it was a sharpie. Loved that lens, but it was just so heavy, and I had other 200mm-range primes. Kinda regret selling it now, though, as usual.

Here are a couple walkabout handheld jpegs from that lens on the K100D:

Thanks for the input. Nice color and contrast from your Kiron lens shot. Is your 200mm a K mount or M42 mount? I am very impressed with three Kiron lens that I have handled and they are all in K mount. All seem to give very sharp pictures at wide open aperture. I used a lot of f/3.8 in testing my vivitar 70-150 f/3.8. And unlike the Vivitar 70-210 Series 1 that I had before with Kiron, the Vivitar 70-150 f/3.8 is a much smaller and compact zoom lens and I like it for portrait shooting in the street, quite easy to focus and handle.

Warmest,
Hin

Those are some nice shots you have there Hin. I have two Kiron made lenses, both are very sharp. The first one I have is a Vivitar 75-205mm f3.8. It was the second lens I bought for my ME Super back in 1981. So I've had it a few years. I've always been pleased with the photo's it produces. The only drawback for me is the lack of an "A" setting. If it had an "A" setting I would use it much more then I do on my k100d. Here is a shot from last summer.

Oh, I almost forgot. I also have a Vivitar series 1, 105mm f2.5 macro which is also a Kiron made lens. So I guess that makes 3 Kiron made lenses.

My other one is a Kiron branded 28-105mm f3.2-4.5. I bought this one to go on my ME-Super as a walk around lens. Also quite sharp.

Thanks for the kind comments, your assessment on sharpness and image quality is very much in line with my impressions with three different lens from Kiron. I am quite impressed with the old zooms from Kiron. I sold my Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f/3.5 for cheap as I can't stand the sheer weight, 879 g, I think. But the Vivitar 70-150 f/3.8 is much lighter and compact and it is surely a keeper for me as I really like the small size, IQ and sharpness.

Can you share with me on the size and weight on your branded Kiron 28-105mm? And how about weight on your Vivitar 105mm Series 1 f/2.5 Macro, I saw wonderful pictures from others in this forum.

Few more test shots that I like

The 105mm is a truly wonderful lens in my opinion. It's only downfall being it is very heavy. Not something you want to walk around very long with! But sometimes it is worth it because of the images you can get from it.

The 28-105mm is lighter then the Series 1 105mm, and handles quite nicely. Again for me the drawback is no "A" setting on the lens. So it usually stays on my ME-Super. The bokeh on this lens is a little more harsh then my other kiron made lenses. Here is a shot of my Kiron 28-105mm attatched to the ME-Super with the 105mm, and the 75-205mm right next to it.

Fred, a lovely collection. A joy to see your lens and gear. Much thanks.

About the metering. Almost 80% of my manual lens don't have the 'A' setting and I don't use flash. And I usually use two methods in metering with my manual lens.

1. Use Av aperture mode and do Ev compensation. Normally, I can consistently dial in +Ev compensation to get accurate compensation.

2. Use M mode and use stop down metering and I consistently adjust the time shutter to compensate manually.

On the field, I usually use #2 method. But as I get a handle on how much I need to compensate after some experience, I can explore with #1 method.

I have a Pentax Super Program and it sure looks like your Pentax ME Super in the picture. Lovely! And if you like AF, you will love the Pentax pz-1/pz-1p/z-1 body, those are lovely bodies but they are not great for manual focus lens.
