The DA 15 is an interesting lens, in general. It just isn't that sharp a lens. My DA *16-50 is sharper at 16mm and f4 than my DA 15. But it is small, flare resistant and gets pretty sharp at f8. If they had changed the coatings and that somehow made it sharper, than I would be OK with it, but I don't buy that coatings are the reason for the lack of sharpness. I just think it has to do with the lens design. I don't really get the rounded aperture blades with this lens either. When I am shooting with it, I generally don't care about bokeh. I mostly want everything in focus, but maybe there are others who struggled with older version of DA 15.

Thanks for the dng uploads mooeep.

In terms of sharpness, contrast, flair, colour etc. both are very close, tough to pick a 'clear' winner, the HD clearly has a minimal effect according to your shots. But the 'starburst' on the SMC version is so obviously better. Maybe the engineers at Ricoh thought the SMC 'sun-bursts' and 'star-bursts' needed to be tamed?! Don't know if those guys read PF and see that we all like the star-sun-bursts, instead they gave us a 'messy light blob'.

I'm glad to of pick-up the SMC DA15 from Adorama for $500. The SMC version will definitely hold it's value.

I don't think it's made it to "great lens" territory. More like "decent lens."

The 18-135 is a very good lens for what it is: a slow ultrazoom that happens to have WR and a motor. That doesn't mean the IQ is anywhere near great.

Yup, Ricoh sure fudged up this lens. I'm glad a nabbed a second hand SMC instead of waiting for the HD

I wonder if any of their other lenses have negative effects... Guess we gotta wait for Adam's tests

Glad I was able to snag one of the SMC DA15s before they all disappear.

It is too sad that Ricoh destroyed the signature of the 15mm ltd. The marketing department won this round against the engineer guys. Good that I bought the SMC version some time ago. I will keep it as my treasure :-)

There are a few SMC 15 LTD's in our marketplace at the moment.
I snapped one up as soon as this comparison came out.
I had been wanting one for a while and decided it was time to act before the prices went up.

This is a very informative thread. Thanks for posting the useful comparison images. After seeing the difference in the star burst effect, which I also prefer, I purchased the SMC version. They are still around. Now we'll see if it starts controlling my mind.

Does anyone know if this same star burst effect also applies to the SMC vs HD versions of the 21mm Limited, or is the HD version of that lens preferable?

John

Thank you for your post. I am also struggling between the SMC and the HD versions. I was thinking to find a used SMC version, but the second set of pictures, at F13, has revealed to me the idea that the HD version starburst is more "natural", although less spectacular. If you see, the starburst rays of SMC at F13 are so long that goes even over the pavement. This is not natural, in my opinion. The starburst of the human eyes (e.g. when you squeeze the eyelids) is nearer to the HD version.
In facts, in the film ages I remember the Cokin filters were popular to create the starburst effect!

I don't see anything unnatural about the starbursts from the SMC DA15:

The SMC DA 15 is my go to lens for car shows. Usually outside in the middle of the day, there is a lot of light bouncing around off all that polished paint and chrome. Car owners love the star bursts that the DA 15 plasters all over on the hot spots. They add a special touch to all the work done to polish that car.
