If you don't need automatic - look into Rokinon/Samyang lenses,
85mm is more 'portrait' than anything else (135mm on APS-C!) - but its a real bargain for 85mm f/1.4
Interesting note on this lens - DxOmark rated it VERY high on Nikon/Canon.
I have the Rokinon version (it was a freebie) and its very sharp.

I'm holding out for Sigma's 18-35 1.8 Hopefully that will give me another stack of primes like my SMC A 35-105 3.5.

I can do manual focus on wider angles better it seems. Honestly, I like manual focusing since it helps me compose better. The 28mm f/2.8 is starting to sound really nice to me. Currently I have $85.

I haven't heard anyone mention the Rokinon/Samyang 35mm f/1.4 yet.

Ricoh XR Rikenon 28mm f2.8 is a real gem if you need across the frame sharpness in a modestly sized package. It seems to be fairly common as well. I have no idea of how much quality varies but mine was the best 40€ I ever spent on a lens.

I also which own a Sigma 30mm f1.4 (the old version) and Vivitar 28mm f1.9 which I like very much for very different reasons. If you are looking for sharp corners you can just forget about the Sigma. The sorry little pixel peeper in me is never quite satisfied with them no matter what the aperture. The excellent center sharpness makes it even worse. It also has a host of other aberrations that I usually care nothing about. It is by far my favourite lens for candid family/friends photography.

There's so much to consider here. I'm not sure at all now what to get haha! Although, now I think I can add the Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/2 T* ZK to the list... if it DOES beat everything else mentioned here I'd probably save up the dang money and get it.

The 50mm F2's aren't the sharpest of the 50's bunch. The F50/1.7 gives you autofocus and it is seriously sharp, if you want to stay at that focal length. Somewhere in the mid $200's should get you one. I'm pretty sure you would notice the difference. I've just started using the one I have more seriously after sitting on the shelf for a fair while after I bought it, and I'm impressed so far.

I've been following both the M28/2 and A28/2 market and they're both a bit pricey for what they are, IMO. I consider a secondhand FA35/2 is better value ...autofocus plus newer coatings. Or a FA28/2.8. I think this might be the best of the F2.8 28's.

I thought about mentioning it (I have the Rokinon 85mm f/1.4) but its close to $600. Maybe a used one might be a deal.
These are FF metal lenses (at least mine is) - so its a tank, and sharp.

I prefer 28mm on APS-C as my normal lens (the M40/2.8 was my favourite on film). After shooting an M28/2.8 for a while I've recently acquired an FA28/2.8 (the 28/2's are hard to find & expensive). I also have an FA35/2 to get a 50mm equivalent.

I haven't seen the 31mm Ltd. but it looks a great lens. In the UK it's over 1000GBP (1,500+ USD), I'm sure the IQ is great but I can't see it being enough to justify buying over the FA28/2.8 (and I prefer 28mm to 31mm).

After much consideration, I've decided on the Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/2 lens, due to its build quality, weather sealing, sharpness, and bokeh. Hopefully I will enjoy this decision. I have to save up a lot of money though.
