Most have said that the sigma 18-35mm has FANTASTIC image quality.

The Sigma, hands down. It will be MUCH more useful for my convention photography.
Same here. I shoot in low light 80% of the time and a wide-to-normal f/1.8 zoom would be incredibly handy.

However, I could see owning the Pentax if the image quality challenges the Limited primes. I'd sell my 21mm to finance it based on the distortion and corner performance alone.

Still they will both have their fans and detractors.
In a place with thieves prowling around I'd have my kit lens or a couple of Taks, not a $1000 piece of jewelry, on my camera.

Sigma 18-35 quality has been proven by many;
Pentax 20-40.... what image quality? we haven't seen a single image from it.

For $1000, it is too expensive for the speed and range. As comparison, the beautiful, all metal 100mm macro WR is $850.

yeah... what if you consider that the FA is f/1.8...? and considering is a variable aperture, by the time you get to 31mm you'll be looking into f/3.x

anyway, im just trying to understand, why would you buy this lens and not the Sigma. it seem to me that the extra weight of the sigma pays off with with 2+ stops (f4 to f1.8) when on the long end.

what will you buy? and why?
I would like to buy them both, no questions. Sigma for low light/indoors, Pentax for travels.
Solved.

Admittedly you can fight the thieves off with a Takumar mounted Half a kilo of magnesium body, half a kilo of steel and glass makes a formidable sucker punch when swung at arms length!

"Big" is an understatement for the Sigma. It's roughly the size of the DA* 50-135 f/2.8, and the weight of the DA* 200 f/2.8. Think about that for a minute...

Personally, my money is on the Sigma 18-35mm. I like that it is wider and faster, great for event photography.

There is something that has been bugging me though. The Sigma has shown some focus adjustment issues and (to my knowledge) there will be no USB dock for K-mount. So is it possible that this lens has known issues that warrant the creation of the usb dock?

Secondly, we have not seen the image quality of the new 20-40mm. If this lens can rival the 40mm limited AND the 21mm limited then maybe this lens will have the upper hand?

I think that Sigma is really good on paper, and many seems to like it really much. We will have to see what will 20-40/2.8-4 be.

Big plus could be snappy and good focus from Pentax side. small size and WR. Aluminium great build.
Big plus from Sigma is lower prize, fast aperture, good image quality.

Minus with fast lens would be it's hit or miss while focusing, especially when you want to have narrow Dof. AND big weight on that, when you need to shoot more to get what you want.

Big lens elements are some times tricky also when shooting with light sources. On wide angle, dust and that kind a things shows at pictures.

I think it is experiences with their past lenses on brands like Canon and Nikon that warranted the creation of the USB dock. Not the 18-35.

Also, unless I am otherwise mistaken - someone had posted that Sigma responded that they will produce the dock for k-mount.

At this rate I wonder of the Pentax will be available before the Sigma! Seems quite vapourware at the moment in K mount
