Opinions on choosing a new limited...

In the near future I am going to be investing in my second Limited lens (already have the DA 40 which is a great lens). The two that I am considering are the 21 and the 70 and I am having a hard time choosing. I could use a lens in the range of both really. I am leaning toward the 21 as the only wide lens I have is the DA 10-17 fisheye, which I love but would like a wide walk around that isn't fishy. On the other hand I could use a good portrait/short tele as well. Right now I use the F 50 1.7 and M 100 2.8 or the Tamron 28-75.

On the one hand, the 70 seems to be really sharp and faster than the 21...but I really think I would use and enjoy the 21 focal length more. I know it is a very subjective thing...but I would just like some opinions, especially from those who own both. Which would you go for first?

I use the DA21 most out of my limiteds, because I like it for street photography.
When I have reasons to use the 70, I end up taking the Tamron 28-75 instead for its versatility.
(I need to try to use the 70 more)

Don't forget the new zoom, which may be better than the DA 21 (we don't know yet):

The zoom is out of my price range I'm afraid.

The 21. You already have 70 covered by the 28-75 which is very good. The 21, surprisingly, has a lot of barrel distortion I was not expecting.

When I read the thread title, I was unsure if you meant the DA Ltd or FA Ltd series. But if you want small-sized quality lenses at a reasonable price, you are definitely after teh DA Ltd series. Back to your query, the DA21mm would make a lot of sense if you have only the DA40mm.

However if you have already a kit lens (18-55), you could consider the DA15mm. Another great limited lens, small in size but packed with an outstanding IQ and ideal for landscape, street photography and interiors:

All in all the previous posters pointed you rightly to the DA21mm. But you may consider the DA15mm fro the future...

I think that's right.

My street kit consists of the 21, 40, and 70. Of these three, the 21 and 40 get the most use. I have the 15; but I tend not to be a wide angle shooter, so it doesn't get much street use. In your case I would go for the 21.

Of the two, I would suggest the DA 21. You seem well covered by your other lenses in the longer focal lengths.

The DA21 is a great little lens. I love it to bits. I had the DA70 for a while, and it is also excellent, but I couldn't justify it over the other portrait primes I own.

You need some 14 point starbursts in your life:

And it does landscapes pretty well too:

If you want to see what a real photographer can do with it, check out Mike Oria's landscapes and cityscapes around San Francisco.

Great feedback...keep it coming. I considered the 15 as well but shy away from it because of my DA 10-17. Like the middle ground of the 21. I have a 28 takumar that I love but wish it were a little wider.

The DA10-17 at the long end produces images which are almost indistinguishable from the DA15 if you "de-fish" using the LightRoom lens profile.

Examples:

DA10-17 @ 17 f/5.6

DA15 f/5.6

Could you afford it if you sold your DA 40?

I wouldn't recommend it yet,
since we haven't seen any sample images,
but if it does turn out to have the special rendering of the other Limiteds,
it would be worth serious consideration.

The DA 15 is a completely different critter than the DA 10-17. Don't write it off just because of the size overlap. I own both of them and have no thought of ever parting with either. That said, I'll probably add the DA 21 to my bag at some point. Whether to choose the 21 or the 70 depends on your photography. The Tamron has you covered in the focal length category and is a good performer but the big draw of all the Limiteds is their size and weight advantage.
