On the K5 series, the focus points are actually quite large.
Can you try to get the body of your subject entirely within the focus point?
Another option might be to set facial recognition,
although I've never tried that myself.

Image size = subject size x. Focal length / distance

Image size will typically be either 16 or 24 mm because that is your sensor size.

Plug in the subject height and shooting distance you have to work out the focal length you need. You can do full body portraits with any lens, it is all about the distance you have to work with

The Canon is a crop body - find an m85/2 its closest to what your friend used... The distant background makes the scene OOF.

Also Google Ryan Benazier.

He has been associated with a methodology compositing images for a wider field of view that is bokeh-licious.

And remember to set the aperture to as open as possible.

For distant shots I'd suggest Samyang 85mm f1.4; for more comfortable distance and AF - Sigma 30mm f1.4

I would think your DA 70 Limited would look similar to that shot if you shoot wide open at f/2.4. Since there really isn't anything behind the 2 people in focus except for a small section of blacktop, the bokeh is pretty even. If your camera is focusing on infinity in a shot like this, then you focus point isn't on one of the people but between them. Make sure your focus is locked.

I was thinking the 70 would do it too - I only threw out the M85/2 because its a touch faster and I own one. Actually, following your comment I looked at the pavement closer, and this appears to be front focussed. I still say, based on my experience with M85/2 that this is a Brenizer shot....

Are you sure your friend's shot is just 1 shot?
I doubt so, since I can't even have it in one shot with a 135/2.5 on my 5D
So your friend certainly did not do it that 'easily'

Read up on the Brenizer Technique as suggested.

The Canon crop factor is 1.6x.
Pentax is 1.5x.
So for the same focal length lens, Pentax will actually be nearer for the same field of view (FOV), so less DOF.
But then, your lenses are different focal lengths.
The 85/1.8 on a D1100 say at a working distance of 6m to do that shot you posted will have DOF of 0.17m
The DA70 at f2.4 for the same framing, will be at a working distance of 4.6m and DOF about 0.21m
Close enough in DOF shallowness for a 1 frame photo.

If you're looking at 85mm and manual - the Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 is good, and not expensive (also a FF lens).

The main problem with using a Pentax lens to copy this exactly is getting that veiling flare.

You should be able to get a similar result with a fast 50 or 55, wide open. At f/1.8 you would only have a few feet of DOF and even less at f/1.4.

IMO it's a long shot taken at a bit lowish angle; thus sky is incorporated, what fakes normal or even wide perspective shot with shallow dof. Look at this example; It's taken with APS-C camera and Samyang 85mm at f1.4.
