to me, pictures are equally sharp with the 16-45. the advantage of the 16-50 is WR/2.8/SDM. optics might be a tad better. cons are price/weight/filter size
don't know what other lenses you have. if not any yet, i'd save my money for a 16-45 & a nice prime, such as DA 70 ltd...
well, its what i did.

Still scared by reliability though. What has been your experience?
You will get lots of opinions on that. From those who had early 16-50s and suffered through multiple SDM failures to those who have had them for years with no issues whatsoever. There a number of folks who take every possible opportunity to post negative comments about the 16-50, (possibly with good reason from their experience) but I think those voices drown out the many people who use the lens regularly, get great images and never have trouble with it. But you cannot prove a negative. I cannot say that because my 16-50 has performed flawlessly that another one will do the same.

It does appear that reports of SDM failure have almost completely dried up and the ones I do see are from older lenses. Pentax stated at some point that the SDM was changed and that anything built in 2012 or later should not have any problems. But that does not mean they have zero defects, any modern lens can have problems no matter what brand it is.

IMHO if you buy new you should be fine, but I would not buy one used or from a 'warehouse' deal. I would also say that if you are not prepared to pay $200 in a few years to get it repaired there are other options. For me, if mine breaks today I'll gladly pay for the repair.

I will just add that I had an SDM failure on my 16-50 six months after purchasing. It was repaired under warranty and I have been using it for 4 plus years since then without problem.

With regard to image quality, it definitely is a good quality zoom. I use it at f4 most of the time, but f2.8 is decent except at the widest portion of the zoom.
