16mm F2 from Samyang/Rokinon/Pro-optic/Bower. Would that lens need an adapter to fit a k-50?

The Samyang and other versions fit like a Pentax A lens. It should fit fine and you will have automatic aperture as well. I use the Samyang 16 for astrophotography and you can check out more here, including one from last night.

Wow your photos are amazing and exactly what I'd like to try my hand at. Would you say 16mm would be better than the 8-16mm

Not being familiar with the 8-16, I cannot comment other than to say a prime is generally better corrected and in this case also faster. DXOMark ranked it highly.

It is rather sharp wide open but vignetting can be a bother. At f/2.2 the vignette is tolerable and can be corrected in post, by f/2.8 it is virtually gone.

Focus is internal and it takes 77mm filters. Build quality is also very nice.

Great photos. How did you make those long exposures like 90 seconds without star trails? Did you use Pentax O-GPS1?

I am interested in the O-GPS1 and hope to try one soon. That will make travel easier. I have been using an equatorially mounted telescope attached to a permanent pier. The camera rides "piggyback".

You can take a virtual tour of my roll off roof observatory here, the telescope, and the variety of cameras used.

Taking images of the Milky Way from my home observatory lacks the variety of the scenic landscapes so often sought by photographers. For me, it is has always been about the Milky Way. But, I would like to try the O-GPS1 and move about.

Do you have any other photos or ones of star trails that you used the 8-16mm ? I looked up the 16mm that baby's just not in my price range.

I have the SMC Pentax-DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited. I wouldn't call it sharp, and I have CA issues with it. I like having something this wide in my arsenal and it doesn't distort much at the corners, but I don't think I'd recommend it for astrophotography because of the CA.

The Sigma 8-16, if you can find one, costs more than the Samyang 16mm or the Samyang 14mm. the Samyang 8mm/3.5 can be found cheaper, though. Big glass elements are expensive.

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 is an excellent choice for this kind of photography, coma is impressively well handled for starfield photography. Though Vignetting is problematic.

And with the above set up I was able to produce this:

Pentax K5IIs - Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 @ 18mm f/1.8 ISO800 20s, Pentax O-GPS1 Astrotracer on. (slight crop)

100% center crop
