Not being familiar with the 8-16, I cannot comment other than to say a prime is generally better corrected and in this case also faster. DXOMark ranked it highly.
It is rather sharp wide open but vignetting can be a bother. At f/2.2 the vignette is tolerable and can be corrected in post, by f/2.8 it is virtually gone.
Focus is internal and it takes 77mm filters. Build quality is also very nice.
