Ck your photo archives to see where the bulk of your shots fall when using using your zoom and this will tell which fl prime you should buy for walk around. Regarding the issue of photo quality - I found 2.8 and faster to be far more important than prime vs zoom because I can shoot lower iso with no flash and have more controle over dof. Prime = immage qualitygets far too much lip service on this forum. Having a properly composed immage with the dof you want that has as little noise as possible will always trump the marginal immage qualty differences between lenses. Doubly so if you dont make large prints. If you are only going to carry your camera with one lens mounted as a walk around, go with the fastest constanant zoom you can afford.

Tamron 28-75 constant aperture is my go-to lens for parties and gatherings. It has great light-gathering capability and range flexibility. One evening I captured over 75 images with no throwaways--well, someone else might have thrown away a few of them!

That's a good question, as it was a pretty popular lens amount our members. Guess not quite popular enough for Sigma, though...

When travelling with the family / kids I always bring a zoom only. It's too unpractical to fiddle around with primes. And also taking photos is not prio 1 then. Plus my other half likes the flexibility of a zoom. Just my experience of course... but something to consider.

On a budget, and considering what you have now, I would suggest either a DA 16-45 or a F/FA 28. These give very good results, at a very affordable price, in fairly small packages. They are also far enough away from your 50mm to give you very different framing options.

Even if that would result in being the widest lens? Don't forget that OP wants to sell the K100D plus kit lens. Personally I find that a bit too long (28..31 is my style

).

But OP can put his kit lens on 40mm for a couple of days (no cheating) and check if he can work with it.

I vote the 35mm f/2.0. It's the 35mm cousin to your 50 f/1.4.
The image quality is fantastic and it is often compared to the famous 31mm Limited.
