I won't comment on the brilliance/naivete of the winning bidder in the auction that Wendy linked to, but I will say, that in my opinion, a lot of what happens on Ebay is insane. A very recent case in point:
Last Saturday I bought a brand new FA 50mm f1.4 from a major retailer here in Toronto. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll mention that being a former employee, I paid less than the retail price of $199.95 CDN. On April 3rd, an auction, by the Ebay store of another major retailer here in Toronto, ended on a used FA 50mm f1.4. The winning bid? $192.50 USD. Why in the world somebody would think that saving roughly $5 is worth giving up a 2 year warranty is beyond me. Maybe they had "Gotta win the auction!" fever.
I think we all need to do our research and stop assuming that Ebay is the only place to get the gear we're looking for.
