A fool and his money, another eWay Pentax lens disaster.

It just befuddles me how one could bid so high.

Pentax ZX-50 35mm Camera Set w/ 4 Lens, Bag & More NR - eBay (item 190209870786 end time Apr-02-08 18:02:21 PDT)

I don't think that's too bad actually. The F 50 is worth about $200 and some seem to think it's worth more. The F 28mm is worth about $250. The Tak should sell around $100 and the 35-80 around $50-70. Plus the camera bag has the Logo!! The camera is crap.

So when you add the lenses up this is fairly decent value. If I won it at this price I'd sell the camera and the 2 zooms. Probably get to keep the 50 and 28 for about $250-300. So in my books that's a fair price.

I hope the winner's not a member here. The title is somewhat offensive.

$417 for the MX and 4 AF lenses, including a Pentax F 28mm f/2.8? That actually seems... reasonable, considering the F 28 2.8 goes for about $200 by itself.

Actually I was hoping for a cryptic message about the upcoming new cameras expected to be seen at photokina....

Should we read between the lines and start a rumor?

I´m with Wendy. It's not about how much other fools pay for these lenses individually, but about how much used equipment is worth. I believe buyers on eBay (and that includes everyone here) have no clue.

But that's just me.

PS: Yes, I'm bitter.

OK Miserere, I'll take the bait since I'm so clueless (and not take your comment personally). So A) Why the bitterness? A lack of lenses you're looking for?

B) How is this such a foolish buy?
For one thing lets take the 28mm that's part of this auction. I've owned one and it's a very good lens ( I sold it when I got my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Di) since I knew it would get less use and the 31mm was on my wish list which I now have. So what are our options in this focal range?
1) the Tamron or a few other similar zooms FL which will cost $350 ++ (DA*16-50mm @ $750.00)
2) the 31mm which is way out of many budgets @ $700-800
3) FA 35 f2 not as wide and selling around $299 at places like B&H when they have inventory and they won't for much longer.
4) an older MF K mount that doesn't offer proper exposure control or AF.
5) DA 21mm @ $450.00 which is wider but slower and might be wider than many would want.
In most of these choices, there will be taxes or other costs as well.
True there's no warranty and there's a risk buying a used lens. But these appear to be in good shape and if so have another lifetime of use.

So say I wanted a 28 and a 50, including shipping, I paid about $225 for each lens and could sell the other parts for at least $100 to $150 to lower the overall cost.

I do agree with both you and Wendy that there are many Ebay auctions that go nuts and I've pointed out several myself on these very forums. But I don't see that so much in this case.
Could you explain why that is such a bad choice?

As I see it, the last 3 used F50 f1.4 that I have seen have sold for more than 270 USD, and I have seen people willing to pay >400USD for a FA28 f2.8AL, the one on the auction is a F28 but I am sure that if this guy end up selling all the items will have benefits. I think that it is fair transaction potentially quite profitable for the buyer.

Ha geez, I guess I should have jumped on the F28/2.8 I saw advertised locally for 75 CDN$...

I saw a FA28 flying in a buy it now at 450USD. I think that price is due to the high score of the lens in photodo. So if the F28 f2.8 doesnt appear in photodo dont expect such a high price. I think that the combination of high photodo scores and rarity multiply the real price of the lenses big time.

Wendy, Now here's a real crime. This lens has been listed and relisted since October. The seller refused dozens of offers (who knows how much). No way in the world this lens is worth this much. great optics but I'd buy the Zeiss at 60% less before shelling out this kind of dough.

The Lister has a whole website of these prices -

KevinCameras

The site uses software to keep from linking directly to a page, so you click the [Pentax K Mount] link at the bottom
