Travel lenses for K-01

Hi guys,

For those of you who travel exclusively with the K-01 only (i.e. no DSLRs) and have to use no more than 2 lenses, what are your favourite?

I am trying to make a decision if I should keep my K-01 for travel or to buy the Q7 for travel.

Cheers

Travel where?

What kinds of photos do you like taking?

When I last traveled I fought very hard with myself to take only 3 lenses hahaha. 28mm, 50mm, 200mm.

Turns out I pretty much only used the 28mm. Mostly because the whole time (in New Caledonia) I was going WOW LOOK AT THAT! and it usually was some lush large vista with green and blue and all the beauty it had to offer.

The more you take, the more you will carry, and that's crap. you should be on a holiday, You have a k-01? Throw a 28on it and be done with it.

you could leave it at f8, iso1600 in tv mode and never have to focus ever! :P

Travel plans not firm yet....just trying to see how the K-01 can be useful. Not really using the K-01 much now that I have my K-3.

I don't have a 28mm. 21mm is the closest I have. So I guess that's what you would suggest if I am bringing one lens only.

Well, looking at your lens list and if yu are thinking along the lines suggested, I'd pack the 70 as well. Almost zero additional space required, and a far better focal length for portraiture. (as you obviously already know)

But personally I'd take the 35 rather then the 21 or (a 28) for the dual role as a crop sensor normal, and its macro facility - it seems i"m more of a "fill the frame with the subject" than a 'wide sweeping expanse' type of guy. What sort of shooter you are will dictate which lenses to take.

Thanks for your input too.

I guess I should be asking if I should keep the K-01...the K-3 is just so much joy to shoot with that I dont know if I should keep the K-01.....which is why I was thinking if it make sense to keep it for travel only....decisions decisions.....

You can't ask people for advice with such a general question.

Where are you going? Tight spaces? Landscapes? Low-light? PLenty of light? And so on and so forth.

I only have a k-01, and for travel, I will take DA35mm mounted and the 10-20 and 55-300 in the bag.
I also have a pentax M 28 and M50, but I'd leave them at home for a long trip, for ease of use.

Raider, I would take the DA 18-135mm lens and the 70 Limited that you and your wife have if you are trying to balance traveling light and something that is versatile.

For a specific suggestion (which may or may not resonate with you),
based on my recent experience,
I would recommend the Tamron 17-50/2.8 A16P.

Despite its potential for superb image quality,
this lens has a mixed reputation among DSLR users,
because of the difficulty of getting it focused accurately with PDAF.
If you try to correct for FF/BF, it may be hard to find a correction
that works for all focal lengths and subject distances.

With the excellent CDAF on the K-01, these problems disappear,
and the lens performs to a uniformly high standard.
The Tamron is now my go-to lens on the K-01
for any unknown situation where a single prime may not work.

Thanks again fellas.

Sorry for another unreasonably general question again....so if you guys already have the K-3, would u guys still keep the K-01 for travel reasons or for going light? Would u even want to keep the K-01.....

Edit: by the way....my wife is asking me to sell the K-01 to help offset the price we have paid for the K-3 (and buy the Q7 for travel if needs be)....I am hoping to keep the K-01....hence the general question......

Thanks for the suggestion. We don't have the Tamron 17-50 but we do have the Sigma 17-70....probably the closest to your suggestion.

IMHO the Q7 will just end up being an LBA attractor though it might be better suited to your specific "travel light" purpose. I don't think you'll get enough money selling the K-01 to cover a Q7, much less significantly reduce the K3 investment.

I recently carried the K-01, FA35/2 and K105/2.8 on a beach vacation. I really didn't think there was a shot I could have used a different FL or missed for want of one.

I usually travel with my K-01 only. Depends on how much space you have and where you are going. I used to take my DA 40mm XS (for general photography), M 50mm f1.7 (for low light photography) and DA L 50-200mm for tele. These days I prefer a slightly heavier kit of Samyang 14mm, DA 40mm XS, and DFA 100mm (tele, macro). For low light I use tripod, but I do miss a genuinely fast/bright lens. And its too bad the K-01 isn't WR, but so far this wasnt a problem on my travels. Guess I only go to sunny places

tl;dr: For travel my priorities are: 1) something wide (for tight spaces)
2) something universal (reliable, consistent)
3) tele (get closer to monuments, performers, animals,..)
4) low-light (after dusk photos, museums, etc.). Can be supplemented by tripod or flash

You can get all of these in two zoom lenses, 3-4 primes, or a combination of those

If I know I don't need long reach, I prefer 21 and 40 xs for K-01. Both are very light and compact, and take great photo.
