My understanding is that most (all?) TC's slow down focus speed a lot, a 1.4TC with a 70-200/2.8 is not going to be like using a native 100-280/4.

If you want something around 300mm, I will go for Tamron 70-200/2.8, the old model, without Optical Stabilization. Is working very well with AF-TC, and it has internal focal change, so the lens does not extend, which is a cause for losing resolution. That extending is the reason why professional photographers and astronomers generally do not use long lenses of that kind. The front elements are heavy, and the lens lose a little from his axial alignment.
