Documenting old lens names in EXIF

I stumbled on a plugin for Lightroom 3 or higher that helps change the lens name to something more useful. I posted some information about it in the software section here:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/32-digital-processing-software-printing/2...al-lenses.html

Lightroom resists making this change which makes the plugin not as smooth as it could be. But finding and selecting the images is a lot easier in LR, especially if they are all RAW like mine are. It's easy to use the filters to choose "A-series", K or M" and "Unknown" lenses to see which ones need names. I have used a lot of non-AF lenses that don't record any data in EXIF. Now I'm working on the last 2000 unnamed lenses in my catalog, hoping to get 95% of the names recorded.
I am writing all these names to the DNG file EXIF directly, so they are not dependent on Lightroom.

Unfortunately, this is just a name and not a code that would help some Sigma users with misidentified lenses. You could correct the names but it might not make lens profiles work automatically. I have seen others complain that the lens names can't be changed with import presets.

If I remembered to set the focal length correctly for SR, I can usually dredge up a memory of what lens it is. Unless it's 50mm. The A series lenses also have an aperture setting, narrowing it down. I have a lot of moon shots, and the size of the moon helps with focal length, leaving only a few possible telephotos. After a few lens tests, I got smarter about taking hundreds of shots of the same subject with like seven lenses, and began putting a post-it note in the shot with the lens name. The last 5% of shots will be mostly from my *ist DS, a long time and many lenses ago.

It would be nice if we could designate the lens name in the body, like AF adjustments...
