Sorry, but the best I can do is:

The SMC DA 70 is $399 at B&H right now.

Aye, no problem, don't buy this exemplary piece of fine Pentax glass, there did that help?

Seriously, you have to try a 77 or you'll always wonder. I'd be really surprised if you are ever willing to give it up, it is simply one of the unique benefits of being a Pentaxian. Others may get some good portraits with some very expensive gear, but the 77 gives you a unique rendering advantage that they wish they had.

Like a previous poster said, I think you'd be much more likely to decide to sell that Tamron 90. Not that it's a bad lens, on the contrary, but it doesn't have the unique beauty to it's rendering that the 77 has.

Keep in mind that once the 77 seduces you, you are very likely to want the 31, another lens that tends to haunt you until you own it. Then, you guessed it, you get seduced all over again. This photography stuff can be scandalous!

When I got my FA*85, I sold my FA77 to a guy on this forum (we met locally). He'd had the FA77 before, but sold it. Now he was getting rid of his 85 (I believe it was the A*85) and going back to the FA77. When I handed him the FA77, he took a quick look at it, took a couple of shots, and said "yep, that's what I'm looking for!" He was very happy, like he'd fully repented of his error, and all was restored again.

Turns out the FA*85 is a slightly better fit for me. But the FA77 is a very, very good lens that I'd sorely miss without the FA*85.

Don't do it. It's a terrible lens. Look it can't even get this background in focus...

As for pets, well they just are not interested in this lens at all....

I give up. Pulled the trigger.

Oh, I know. I've been experimenting with photography for less than a year and have already acquired 3 bodies - NEX 5R (Christmas gift), NEX-6, and K-3 (early Christmas/50th birthday gift) - plus assorted lenses. And that's not even getting into photography courses and travel workshops.

Another justification I can use is that I'm "buying for two", since Mr frogoutofwater and I share the specialized lenses and certain other kit.

Well, then you're still using legitimate justifications. You'll find that they get weaker and weaker as you go along.

Is one of those pics 160? The first one with the girls was in fairly heavy shade so probably set a range of 100-800 to be used and the camera must have selected 160? I shoot aperture priority most of the time with portraits. I think I have exposure set on 1/3 stops in the settings too.

I think I hate you all. Or love you all. I'm trying to decide what lens to buy myself for Christmas, and I have to read this thread. A pox on you all!

At first it was to be the Sig 18-35, but we must wait till May for it. Then I thought the 10-20, but most prefer the 15 I already have. The 21 is right out because of the 18-35 plan. I like my Tak 50 and Sig 30, so maybe the 77 is the one...

I suppose after 3 glasses of Thanksgiving wine is not the time to decide!

If you see my signature, I normally use 2 of the lenses for portraiture and the 77 is one of them.
