Help for Birthday Present for Wife! - 15mm lens

Hi everyone,

I don't know much about photography but my wife loves her pentax camera and photography.

A while back she mentioned that she'd really like a Pentax SMCP-DA 15mm F/4 ED AL Auto Focus Lens.

It's her birthday in December and I'd like to pick one up for her as a surprise in the sales.

I've found one online described as this a Pentax SMCP-DA 15mm F/4 ED AL HD Lens for DSLR Cameras, Black. Is it the same one? If not, what are the differences? I think she wants one to take wide angle photos. Which one should I get?!

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There are two versions, the smc and the hd. They're basically the same lens. I would recommend getting this one as it's currently on special:

Pentax Ultra Wide Angle smc-DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited 21800 B&H

Essentially, the HD and SMC are different coatings on the lens. The aperture blades were also changed, from straight on the SMC version to rounded on the HD. Judging from Adam's first impressions of the new HD lenses versus the older SMC ones, of which I have to agree with, the SMC version of the 15mm is the better of the two. The 'wow' factor of the SMC is lost on the HD
